Civil War Finds From Hot Tennessee-Gun Tool, Buttons, Hoof Pick, & Bullets

I am happy to report that Dman's shoulder is improving daily. However, I am sad to report that he broke his foot last week and is in a walking cast. He considered going relic hunting with us to a Confederate Camp where Josh just last night received permission from the landowner for the "Trio" to hunt this morning but his doctor said he would be sorry if he did so he reluctantly declined. Maybe next week. Never a dull moment with Dman but he loves digging relics like we do.
Josh and I arrived at the farm at 6 am and hunted until 10 am at the CSA Cavalry site. The top row of relics in the first pic were Josh's finds from a solo hunt last week at a U..S. Cavalry Camp that he discovered last year. He hunted that virgin site last Summer and Fall and I wrote an article on his discovery with Dman as Official Photographer scheduled to be published in the August issue of W & E Treasures Magazine.
We recovered all the other relics this morning. Josh had the best find today with the gun tool which was solid and in remarkably good condition. My best find was the cuff size flat button with a "Superfine Colour" back mark no doubt brought from home by a CS Soldier. The other flat button was mine also. Josh dug the iron hoof pick probably made from a discarded wagon staple. We dug a few bullets-mostly round balls. Any CW relics found during the Summer here are fun finds in the hard, dry soil.
Notice Josh is proudly wearing his "Tenn. Trio" cap and shirt with his gun tool in the second pic. I'm working on getting that logo imprinted on Dman's cast-LOL. HH from the Tennessee Trio, Quindy.

What is the U shaped item in the center?

Congrats to both of you on some nice CW relics!
Poor Dman, if he ever gets back to full strength in one piece you & Josh better watch out Q!
You'll never get him out of the woods! ;D
Thanks Rob. We may need to call 9-1-1 to get him out of the woods the way he's going-LOL. HH, Quindy.

AR, we think it was a blacksmith made hoof pick used for cleaning gravel, stones, etc. from the horse's hoof. See how sharp one end is and the other end bropken off probably why it was discarded). I found one at another CSA Cav. Camp last Winter. Cavalry soldiers carried them because they were light and fit easily into saddlebags. I attached a pic of the one I found last Feb. The Confederates used whatever they could find. The one I found is a match to the hoof pick shown on Page 141 of Crouch's Relic Book. We are not CW relic experts so any other ideas as to its use are welcomed. Thanks for looking.

Could you shoot a close up, and slightly from the side, of that gun tool. I want to see if there is a "knob" on it and if so, the size. Thanks.

Unfortunately, Josh took it with him and is about 40 miles away HPD. I can tell you that it does have the "knob" and is that standard issue U.S. gun tool used with the Springfield rifle. The knob is about 3/8" in dia. and sticks up a little less than 1/4" above the tool. The knob acts as a brad to keep the screwdriver blade attached to the main tool. Sorry we can't gat a pic, Quindy.

It takes a big man to admit that. ;D :laughing9:
Glad to see the Tenn. Two made it out today. You guys are diehards.
I'm thinking even with a broken foot Dman should be able to at least serve you guys chilled water and wipe your brows. :dontknow: :tongue3:

Some nice CW finds. A gun tool is still on my list. It's always nice to find the oddities like the hoof pick too. :hello2:
Congrats,
Dug
P.S. I lost track. Who's buying lunch lately? :icon_scratch:

Wow Quindy. I commend you for hunting in this heat. I tried Sunday from 7am to 10am. Congrats on your finds. Boy sure wish colder weather would get here.

Re: Civil War Finds From Hot Tennessee-Gun Tool, Buttons, Hoof Pick, & Bullets

Thanks for the explanation; very succinct. I found one, and it matched size and "knob" to one in a book, but mine is broken just below the crescent. I am tickled to death to have a springfield tool. I suspected, you confirmed it.

Quindy,

The Tennessee Trio is sounding more like Two and Half Men these days :laughing7:

Hopefully DMan can get back to full strength for the fall season!

Good to see you guys braved the heat to save some more history

Re: Civil War Finds From Hot Tennessee-Gun Tool, Buttons, Hoof Pick, & Bullets

I am saving myself for the fall hunts. We have some great places lined up with a lot of potential. Can't wait till fall.

We are not sure and were hoping someone would know on Tnet. I'm betting it's post war. The landowner looked at it when we made the pic and thought it may be a piece of horse tack. Thanks for looking NOLA_Ken and HH.

Nobody yesterday MM. Josh couldn't get anyone to work for him so he had to book. You will get a gun tool over there. Just keep looking in those small U.S. camps. HH, Q.

Later in the day Randy, it cooled off after a few showers. Of course, we were long gone by then. Come on Fall. HH, Quindy.

Me too. Hopefully, a few of the tips we have been given will pay off. I'd settle for just ONE virgin CSA Camp-LOL. Q.

For some reason it looks to me like the steel in a flint and steel firemaking kit or strike a light. That's what I thought it was.
