Picture number one is of the artifact...Picture number two is a picture that was in "Ask Mark Parker" in April 1999... It is a cap plate for the New York Militia c. 1885... The design is very similar but the spacing between the arrows is larger... Can someone help me identify this and give me a guess as to value...chetler

Hey, Chetler—

Your find looks as if it might be part of a Civil War period pistol flask. There were many with similar embossed eagle & shield patterns. Here's one (right, below) for comparison— maybe not identical, but pretty close.

By the way, the New York Militia (or "Joullain") cap plate that was in Mark Parker's column is much larger— over 6" wide.

Any time, Chetler! If I miss a post that you'd like me to check out, just send me a PM and I'll get right on it.

All the best,
PBK
