20191215_123857.webpI found this sword yesterday and was hoping to confirm it being a U.S cavalry .
I found it on a rock outcrop overlooking the river on my property . it was only in the ground 2'' deep and overloaded my machine with an iron tone.
I took these pic with my phone as soon as I figured out what it was.
I 'm seeking advice on how to clean or preserve it.
keep in mind it is stuck in the scabbard and soaking may not work because it can't be rinsed properly I have it setting in the area of the woodstove in an effort to remove all the moisture.
dig those large iron signals guys , the next one may be something good..DSCN2476.webp20191215_123549.webp20191215_122946.webpDSCN2475.webp

Wow, incredible find ticndig. Well done and congrats.

Most of us can only dream of a find like that! Congratulations.

Thanks for stopping in and the kind remarks guys , it is my best find in 30 years of detecting. I still hit the woods a few times a week and dig those overload iron signals.

Great find!

All the best,

Lanny

OH MY GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's an amazing find, and its condition is unbelievable. I would love to know the story of how it got there.

put marvel mystery oil in the scabbard and let soak i a few days

I am wondering who place the sword there and why nobody found it before you. You did good.

I highly doubt it was placed there , more likely lost by a union soldier on his way to Appomattox, this part of Virginia is a major civil war area.

and why it was not found before could be asked about any object ever dug by anyone. every coin, relic and pull tab.

the site is privately owned by me , remote and a very steep bluff overlooking the river , not your average play ground hunt.

I've been back out there a few times this winter and dug some 3 ringers and flat buttons.

That sword turned out pretty fricken cool...

Sort of late to the party, but huge congratulations on such an amazing find!

The person who left the sword may have found it himself and just got tired of carrying it, especially if he knew the war was near its end. If it wasn't issued to him, he probably had little attachment to it. Just wild speculation on my part!

Great Jumping Jehosaphat, ticndig!!! How in the world did I miss this stellar find! A belated congratulations is definitely in order, my friend!

Thank you Creskol, Not sure how you missed it , I was shocked to find it as relics are scarce in this area .
It was found on a steep hillside and really never got water in the scabbard. I was able to dislodge from the scabbard and the sword is still shiny and sharp.
The scabbard is somewhat pitted but still solid.
