I thought you ate your avitar not a cotton mouth. The arrowheads are beautiful. Are they like the one you made the banner with?
What are you doing with the right kind of snake tool? Where you hunting them also?

Newt,

Nice point and I like the snake. On 10-18-09 I encounterd my first Copperhed. My friends asked me if I killed the snake. It was 40 degrees when I encountered the snake. The snake was very lathergic due to the cold temps, but I would not harm a piece of nature.

Not a cottonmouth, just a harmless water snake. Too small and skinny for much of a meal.
I see you carry a hook with you, are you into herps?

The point is gorgeous. Would love to see more pics. What material is that?

Hey Newt,

Thought that piece looked familiar, then looked up at the banner....sure enuf! That material is gorgeous. The original knapper must have been showing off for the ladies. Like a fine piece of jewelry, maybe? Or for a respected friends burial.
As far as dinner, I'ld have to agree with thirty7.

The picture in your post shows a water snake, not a copperhead. Either way, glad you didn't kill it.
No need to ever kill 'em.
Well, I guess if they come into your yard and you don't feel able to safely remove it, it would be understandable.
No good reason to kill them in the woods, unless you really did plan to eat it and/or skin it, and then only if it was legal.
Of course you'd have to be able to accurately identify a snake before you know whether it's legal to kill it.

Good call! You're right on. This would have been eaten if were an Indian that found it. I've had this type before and they taste good. The bones can be a problem.

I've been snake huntin' many times before getting into artifacts. It's made from Coastal Plains Chert.

Fortunately, there were quite a few throughout time on this stretch. I have some points separated by 5-8 thousand years. I recently found a small quarry on a tributary to my big creek.

Killer point! I was creek fishing once and had a good-sized snake swim right beside my legs. I didn't see him until he was right beside me. Makes you kinda hold your breath when they come up on you without you seeing them first!

Nice point! Great color! The snakes in the pics... The first two pics were a Brown Water Snake and the the third pic was a Banded Water Snake. Cool finds. Especially this late in the year. I haven't seen a Brown since I moved from Florida.

I found a small Redbelly Snake this past week while pheasant hunting in North Dakota. Temps were in the high 30's and he was in the middle of a dirt road.
