An older friend I work with recently dusted off his Metal detector after many years. He went to a local spot with some history and came into work with this. I told him I think it’s 1600’s Spanish silver. I believe it’s real but any additional information is helpful. Needless to say he has got the itch back.

I wonder how many time that’s been lost and found? It looks like it was drilled for a pendant already.

To me it actually looks like it was punched, and was done a very long time ago by the oxidation buildup inside the hole.

Quite often I find the older silver coins holed, particularly Reales. Several theories abound as to the reason such as sewn into clothes for safe keeping to superstitions of warding off evil.

there was an archaeology paper about the holes being for talismans made by slaves, and calling every holed coin recovered a ward against evil. Obviously to us this isn’t true, due to the sheer numbers of these we dig.
