I just purchased a Garrett Ace 250 and was wondering if I should get a coil cover? ???
I will be using my detector on fresh water beaches and in public park areas. I have read a few articles that recommend using one to protect the coil from scratches and “hits” on rocks and other objects that could damage the coil.
Do any of you use one? ???

Get one. Not because you'll wear out the coil...it would take A LOT of detecting to do that. But it makes a differenece when you go to resell someday.

Your Ace 250 should have come with a coil cover already on the coil, I know mine did when I got it.

It's wise to use a cover! Even if you use it in the water, you will scrape the edges of the coil on sand or rocks and it only takes one hairline crack to ruin a coil. Covers are on all my detectors.

Don't forget to take your cover off to empty out the dirt that will inevidably get in there or you make get falsing and reduced depth. Or do what I did and just silicone it on permamnently :D

I had mine siliconed too and I can't recommend it anymore. In fact, Minelab doesn't either. I had a small gap where the silicone loosened and black sand got inside the cover. I didn't see the gap but heard the detector go crazy and thought something went haywire inside. I took off the cover and there was the black sand. It worked fine after that. You just have to remember to remove them once in a while.
