Ok.. this is funny.. yesterday afternoon I was running a few errands and decided to take the two big jars of coins and dump them in the coinstar before I let too many more build up... had $1200 the last time I did that and it took forever!! So.. as I'm dumping them in.. first the wheats don't seem to process.. so I had 4 kick back out.. the oldest being a 1929... and then a 1959 Quarter.. so.. that was cool... well.. then about half way through my second jar, which had most of the dug coins in it.. the machine jams! So.. the customer service person comes over.. and opens it up... seems a flat button somehow made it's way into the jar!! so.. she removes that and gives it to me.. and there is a little metal cup like thing in the machine that catches trash.. she went to clean that out.. and there were two Silver Eagles in it!!! She just looked at the them and said "I didn't know they made silver dollars anymore?" I said.. "I'll give you a buck each for em" and she did!! so I picked up two 1992 silver eagle.. it perfect shape.. a buck a pop!! and cahsed in $420.20 worth of change.... about 1/3 dug... all and all.. not a bad afternoon!!

$1200, wow, must have been pretty heavy. That's 60 pounds of quarters alone. Did you use a wheel barrow? :D Cool find though.

What percentage does the coinstar take?
Here in California they charge 8.9% - definitely not worth it.

I take my change (clad) to the local coin shop and they sort it for free,
or else the local casino.

True... I fall prey to how easy it is.. I have no other place to take it.. the bank will no longer sort and count for you.. that is where I took the $1200 before... but.. with silve at $17 spot.. picked up 2 oz for a buck.. that about breaks me even on the issue.. I won't roll them myself that is for sure!!!

You did better than me. I dumped my coins in at the credit union tonight, and got a Pence coin, a Canadian penny, and a 1943D steel Wheat penny. I was wondering why this penny stuck to the magnet in the coin tray. ;D

Plaster buckets actually.. ;-) a lot of it was from a pre WWI Polar Water bottle I filled over the years and I didn't want to break the bottle!! So I spent a couple of night with it turned on it's side using a chop stick to feed them out.. I will never do that again... the same bottle as since been filled with wine corks... plus 1/2 of another ;-)

You had better luck at the coinstar than I had all last year. Guess I'll head down to the food lion............

Actually, they now give you the option of taking a gift certificate (a number of different stores) or eCertificates and there's no charge for sorting. I do use them for dug coins because I can't stand to roll, I don't tumble and most of my finds are from the beach (and in real bad shape). It's just easier.

Now see.... I was just researching them last night.. I "hear" lots of people talk about them.. but the same number that talk about the DFX. So.. I thinking about getting one at some point... but if I'm digging 3 ringers at 14" with my DFX.. is the minelab going to be any better? and I have pics I can dig up and post of my 14" digging tool sitting down in the hole with a 3 ringer below it..

Here in NYC you can use the coin machine at any Commerce Bank and you keep all the $$, no % charge. When your done dumping your coins just give the ticket to the teller and then.....PAYDAY!
