Collapsible Travel Scoop Handle - Help

I have a Coob scoop that has a 35mm or 1.35" diameter opening. I am looking for something that is strong (preferably carbon Fiber) to use as a shaft without needing to buy a new scoop.

Here's what I bought. Comes in 2 pieces with a pushbutton to attach and detach.
Only trouble I had with it is when I went beach detecting for a week and didn't wash it off. The button was hard to press and the handle sections were a bit "froze" together.
I was able with some effort to twist the handles apart. Ever since that experience, I've clean it after using and have had no further problems.
So not so much manufacturing oversight as user laziness. They're selling for about $65 on Ebay.
