Colonial Buttons, & Buckle

No Chain cents though, sorry. (for myself)

Anyway, super nice day. Found my first cuff button ever, and got another too, and as most of the buttons I find are just plain flat, any with a design is a welcomed find.

Got this buckle, the iron bit "may" be still intact, that would be a first too, will clean it up some more and see.

The copper is a Nova Scotia piece.

Yes Dave, that's it. BTW the "damage" is old I didn't do it, The date is the same as your pic. 1861. Be nice to find a '62. That is my 32nd copper this year.

Tried, but no such luck. The iron bit was in there,(as it is on the otherone shown)) but with a bit of picking with a needle it fell out. So I'm not going to try it with the other I found earlier, less I get a better idea. Anyone ?

I don't think I'm ever going to find an intact buckle at this point. To those of you who have, BIG congrats. 200 yrs+ and that small pin not rotting off is amazing.

Well not a lot to loose, and only one way to find out, however I think in my case it would take some time, and the copper/bronze would end up looking "new" ? wouldn't like that.

Only tried electrolysis once on a piece that was all iron, need to experiment.

Re: Colonial Buttons, & Buckle

GREAT & awesome hunt! Breezie

As far as using electrolysis on it, from what I understand, you can only 'fry' iron and not brass, copper, etc.

well my buddy Dan LEDDEL says he leaves his iron relics outside in the element on a wall and over time all the blistery stuff just falls off and looks nice afterwords.maybe give that a shot
