Hey guys,

Still in shock over digging this one yesterday at my latest site. This particular permission continues to defy explanation, not listed on any maps...Mills Atlas or otherwise. It appears the site was abandoned shortly after 1800 with the exception of a small union picket post nearby. My research continues as I attempt to pin down the family that owned this property during the 18th century. Regardless of who the land belonged to, it's clear that this southern family was loaded. So far the coinage has included a 2 pence rosa americana, 2 COBs, and 3 pre-1750s Spanish. I could only dream of the prospects of recovering a colonial gold coin, but managed to recover the next best thing. Here's the in situation shot, fresh out of the plug - Deus XP 11.7Khz 45VDI at 8 inches...not pictured is my jaw on the floor in shock.

Quick rinse under the sink and wow...just wow (any other site I would have walked right over thinking it was small foil)

Suspect the stone is blue turquoise, all the patterns are hand etched on the surface- 22K gold. I've reached out to a few experts to try and narrow the date range, but most have stated early 1700s. I've dug a few 18th century copper rings, 1 silver, but this target is without a doubt a find of my lifetime, and a very personal piece. Just incredible to think this stuff is still out there to be found after 300 years in the dirt.

Did score another stunning late 1600s/ early 1700s crystal/glass button

The "modern" buttons came from the old picket post- pair of general service and a 1 piece patriotic eagle.

In the pluff mud I also pulled a slamming brown bess butt plate, took a few hours to remove the salt corrosion- no regimental markings visible

Also pulled a flintlock plate with MB stamped inside

The flat buttons...there's more not pictured; nice variety of early blank slave wear, and highly decorative pieces (nearly all with no backmarks).

That about covers the spread, this week has been one I'll not soon forget, rattlesnake and a gold colonial ring within 7 days. Probably time to hang up the detectors as I'm not going to top these find anytime soon. Thanks for your comments and good luck out there!

OMG what a ring! Very awesome. Banner for sure! :icon_thumleft:

VMI Digger: I did not pay homage to your snake button; I've been busy, but that is not excuse, so I now beg 1000 pardons - you detecting god! :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy: I'm told that they have made past exceptions for the one banner at a time for individual members. If that is so, then this awesome find should definitely be an exception as well, and I'm voting accordingly. Such a find encompasses all those qualities that get a detectorist out of bed at 5:00 a.m. with nothing more than a lot of hope, a good machine, and some research. Your find is in wonderful condition and possesses rarity and value. A stunning find. And if you don't get banner, you'll have to be content with back-to-back killer finds! I hope you can find solace in your difficult situation. :tongue3: So what about your one-week old avatar of the snake button? Keep it or go for the gold? Man, your going through avatars like I go through underwear. You the man! Congrats to you - EPIC FIND! I believe you have no worries on the date range - solid Colonial Period find. Check the link - turquoise was used for 18th century jewelry.

Wow... just wow... like you said. After metal detecting for a couple years, I've come to this conclusion. "There are two types of people in this world. The type that dropped and lost things and the type that didn't". You, Sir, found the all thumbs family cellar hole. Congrats to you Mister.

Some really great finds.
Coming home with Colonial Gold is unbelievable.

What a fantastic, rare and beautiful find in the Gold ring and really all I can say is "Wow! Congrats on the ring find and all of the other finds! While you have pulled some awesome and rare pieces from the ground on this site, I would bet and hope that there are many more such finds waiting for you to find them and bring them back into the light of day. Banner vote is going in for this awesome find.

The detail on that ring is beautiful, quite a site. That area would be hard to stay away from. Congratulations!!!

I’d be pitching a tent. Building a fire. Bringing extra batteries. Loading my car up with clothes, blankets and food to last at least a week. You have found a spot we have all hoped for. Those are some amazing finds. I voted banner on the beautiful very old ring find. Congrats and hope to see more. Take care.

You definitely have my BANNER vote-and if ever there was a find that deserves an exception to the one-at-a-time banner rule this is it!!!!

:blob1::blob1:

Thanks for the banner vote sleepy

An excellent site, and a STUNNER of a ring! I usually walk over small foil signals, that is, when I'm not hunting old dirt such as that. BANNER all day long, and don't hang your gear up just yet, I'm sure there's a lot of great stuff to be dug! My vote is in...Congrats are in order, Ddf.
