Hey, dudes, Paco and I got out to the Steppe Farm today. Our day started off slowly for the 1st 45 minutes. We were hitting the area where Zoyboy and Paco found their Classic Head half cents, but it wasn't producing, so we decided to head to another cornfield on Mr. Steppe's land. So, while walking back to the car, I kept my coil low and got a nice signal. It turned out to be a mystery target...I re-checked the hole and got a nice high tone on my detector. This target pinpointed at 5.5", so I dug down and was rewarded with a green medium-sized disc. I picked it up and yelled to Paco, "Dude, I think I have a half cent!" He ran over and while I was cleaning it, he gave me a slap on the shoulder and said, "Dude, AWESOME!" After cleaning it with my finger, it looks like it is unidentifiable. After consulting the redbook, I can fully say that it is an American half cent....it is 23.5 mm in diameter. But, I still had to look more closely at it for awhile. I looked at the edge of the coin and I believe I see "lar." This may indicate that it is a Liberty Cap, since this is the only half cent that has "Two Hundred for a Dollar" on the edge of the coin.

After the half cent recovery, we decided to head to another cornfield that is about 30 yards from the Susquehanna river. While in this field, Paco got the 1st target...a nice-looking gold plated button. After that, I detected for about 20 minutes until I got a nice "Quarter" reading that pinpointed at 5". This target turned out to be a Machin's Mills Colonial. I shouted to Paco, while performing a fist pump in the air, "Dude, I just retrieved a Colonial!"

About 30 minutes after my 2nd copper, I got another nice "Penny" reading that pinpointed at 1.5". Indubitably, it was another Machin's Mills Colonial. I performed another fist pump, this time with two hands in the air, and yelled, "Can you say two, RP? Another Colonial!"

About 20 minutes after my 3rd copper, I was walking up a cornrow and got a loud hit. I looked down and saw another coppa laying, indeed, dudes, right on top of da ground. I picked it up and yelled to Paco, "Dude, a Con-nec-ti-cut copper!" After the shout, I took my gear off and performed the chicken dance, while the entire time I was making comical smiley faces. I guess I got too giddy after all of those coppers.

Thank you, Mr. Steppe, for granting us permission to relic hunt on your historical land and for being such a sweetie pie. :D

Update, dudes, my half cent is a Draped Bust. After the soak, I can see part of a Drape. Also, at the top of the coin, on the obverse, I can see the "Y" in LIBERTY. I still can't believe my day, dude detectorists!

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Yes they are...We got lucky to find ours...A friend had lost a large cent he found while plowing one of his fields...So we converged on the field searching his large cent...Well we found it...only after finding 600 colonials laying EVERYWHERE in the field...oh and a dozen or so reales .... I found a beautiful Vermont in that field also...And a Nova....and some others....Ah the good old days.....

Keep up the great job!!!

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Kirk,
Great finds Dude! I can't imagine finding coins that old. Please bring a video camera next time so we can view the fist pumping chicken dance. :D
Was there any design / backmark on the button Paco found?
Congrats to you guys,
MM

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Modern, I don't think Paco's button had any design on it.

Boobydoo, I do love to have a great time when I detect, even if I'm not finding anything worth mentioning.

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Good job on those old coins. Did you try the peroxide cleaning method yet?

Sounds like a lot of fun. It's always nice to have someone there to witness a nice recovery.

Mirage, thanks for the reply, bud. I don't think I am going to clean my coppers anymore. I just don't trust any of those methods. Don in SJ's state has different soil conditions than my state. I like the look of them with a little bit of dirt still encrusted on the obverse and reverse.

I wish you luck in the future, dude! Please send my humble regards to Dan. :)

You must feel super threatened by my abilities, zoy! :D

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Dudes, I am going to soak my half cent in olive oil. Hopefully, I get some details. I will cross my fingers on it actually being a Liberty Cap. ;D

Thanks, Paul, for the title "King of the Coppers." I was just a very lucky dude yesterday. Paco was in the vicinity of the coins, but didn't have the luck for the day. Our club now has 10 Colonials for the year.

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

I was just sitting here dreaming of such finds. Congrats on the great job!

As of 10:05 P.M., your detector is in a serious state of imminent harm. What I am about to carry out will place the rest of "Bone Dry" at an advantage. Kirkie, when you start swinging this Sunday, you won't notice anything out of the ordinary until after 249 continuous sweeps.

This Sunday, you will be able to tell the rest of the dudes on this forum what the zoyboy did....hehehehehe

Well, I just performed 249 continuous sweeps and it started to make "grunting" noises. I had to take my detector box apart and see what you did....after closer examination of the hardware, I noticed a dime-sized black box connected with my "Performance" connection wire. Hmmm....hence the reason for the "grunts." Also, I noticed that you greased my "Accurate Pinpoint" connection wire with battery acid. Hmmmm....I wondered why my detector wouldn't pinpoint accurately (the center was off by 5 inches). Lastly, the connection wire to my "Tone ID" was tampered with. Hmmmm....hence the reason for a piece of foil giving a high tone and a quarter giving off a low tone. You had a great plan, Zoy, to make me dig more garbage than goodies. :D

This is definitely foul play! :D

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Great coppers! Puts you in touch with history.....

Keep safe...

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees...that is exactly what I wanted you to do. When I first began tampering, my main goal was to destroy the least important aspects of the XL Pro by leading you astray with dime-sized black boxes and battery acid residue. Little did you know, I set a sweep motion detecting device on the "Signal Balance Control" connection wire, which is probably the most important "knob" on the detector. Without a fine-tuned "Signal Balance Control" system, your detector will "spit and sputter" somewhat like leaky swimmming pool. So, when 99 choppy sweeps are executed, you will first notice a strong stench coming from the speaker area of the machine. Then, once a carefully calculated "stench volume" releases itself from the device, you will finally realize what exactly the zoyboy has devised and carried out. Until then, your detector will be sleeping quietly in the closet, and waiting for a wonderful day out in the field....hehehehehe ;D ;D ;D
