Hey, dudes, Paco and I got out to the Steppe Farm today. Our day started off slowly for the 1st 45 minutes. We were hitting the area where Zoyboy and Paco found their Classic Head half cents, but it wasn't producing, so we decided to head to another cornfield on Mr. Steppe's land. So, while walking back to the car, I kept my coil low and got a nice signal. It turned out to be a mystery target...I re-checked the hole and got a nice high tone on my detector. This target pinpointed at 5.5", so I dug down and was rewarded with a green medium-sized disc. I picked it up and yelled to Paco, "Dude, I think I have a half cent!" He ran over and while I was cleaning it, he gave me a slap on the shoulder and said, "Dude, AWESOME!" After cleaning it with my finger, it looks like it is unidentifiable. After consulting the redbook, I can fully say that it is an American half cent....it is 23.5 mm in diameter. But, I still had to look more closely at it for awhile. I looked at the edge of the coin and I believe I see "lar." This may indicate that it is a Liberty Cap, since this is the only half cent that has "Two Hundred for a Dollar" on the edge of the coin.

After the half cent recovery, we decided to head to another cornfield that is about 30 yards from the Susquehanna river. While in this field, Paco got the 1st target...a nice-looking gold plated button. After that, I detected for about 20 minutes until I got a nice "Quarter" reading that pinpointed at 5". This target turned out to be a Machin's Mills Colonial. I shouted to Paco, while performing a fist pump in the air, "Dude, I just retrieved a Colonial!"

About 30 minutes after my 2nd copper, I got another nice "Penny" reading that pinpointed at 1.5". Indubitably, it was another Machin's Mills Colonial. I performed another fist pump, this time with two hands in the air, and yelled, "Can you say two, RP? Another Colonial!"

About 20 minutes after my 3rd copper, I was walking up a cornrow and got a loud hit. I looked down and saw another coppa laying, indeed, dudes, right on top of da ground. I picked it up and yelled to Paco, "Dude, a Con-nec-ti-cut copper!" After the shout, I took my gear off and performed the chicken dance, while the entire time I was making comical smiley faces. I guess I got too giddy after all of those coppers.

Thank you, Mr. Steppe, for granting us permission to relic hunt on your historical land and for being such a sweetie pie. :D

Update, dudes, my half cent is a Draped Bust. After the soak, I can see part of a Drape. Also, at the top of the coin, on the obverse, I can see the "Y" in LIBERTY. I still can't believe my day, dude detectorists!

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Great finds! Sounds like you had good reason to do the chicken dance :D

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

way nice! I wouldn't have thought about really looking in a corn field. Excellent finds!

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

very Nice Kirk

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

three colonial coppers in one day with a half cent thrown in to boot is good cause for the chicken dance! ;D awesome!

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

That is definitely a day that will go down as being one of the best in our club! Doy, ever since you put that 9.5" coil back on, I knew just how lethal you can be sometimes!

You better watch that detector when it is sleeping at night, because one wire disconnection from the zoyboy can place that machine into one massive chatter box. :-* :-*

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Dang, that is one heck of a day. Any silver coming out of those fields ?

Chris, we may have hit onto a Colonial homestead. The DD will be in the closet for the rest of my lifetime. As stated by Paco, "Kirk, that coil is making love to you, man!" :D

I am now to 4 Colonial coppers for the year!

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

Great finds...I am curious as how you know they are counterfits? Is it easily identifiable......They look like real coppers to me...And could date to 1717ish....The Machin's Mills Colonial were counterfeits of the real thing... And much more valuable than the real ones. Here is some history on the counterfeits

And one on the coins

Again great finds

Man oh man, that's an incredible site your hunting! I'm still looking for my first half cent. Needless to say, slow down and hit it hard and often. It's almost a certainty there's more good things to be found there!

Odds on they are counterfeit, but most likely not Machin's, the vast majority of counterfeits are not Machins Mills coppers.
I am still doing a survey on KGIII coppers and still have not seen one Regal posted since I asked, and the numbers now are near 90 in my survey, and all are counterfeits that have been ground found in the USA.
I personally have about 28 KGIII coppers and only 1 is a Machins Mills btw.

Kirk, nice spot, really producing the oldies, the CT coin appears to be in the best shape, always nice to see both sides of the coins posted for IDing.

I consulted my redbook and I believe they are Machin's Mills coppers. The busts are very similar as well. But, I do think I see a 1745 on my one copper, so maybe they aren't counterfeits. :)

Re: Colonial Site Yields Many Coppers!

I will have to study up on my Colonials a little better. So far, in my short 2 and a half years of detecting, I have found 7 Colonial coppers. They are such a thrill to find!
