Confederate Buckle and a Civil War Bonanza

This is from today, and a couple days ago. I went to two different sites, and both sites have been pounded in the past. I saw still able to get some nice items out of them. The Confederate buckle is iron and rather non-descript but a si miliar one is shown in "Confederate General Service Accoutrement Plates" by Lon Klein. They were widely used but this is the first one I have found. Another heavier buckle is still attached to the iron strap and has a square nail still in it. They lost a lot of the knapsack pieces, and I have some small iron buckles from the same spot. In the riker mount is some more miscellaneous items including some charcoal from a late 1863-1864 civil war hut!

The little eagle button was attached to a piece of a ration can, and the Deus picked it up about 4" down in the horrible Virginia red dirt. The crotal bell is a No. 5 and late 18th to early 19th century and was found in my PA site. Some of the nails are rose heads and will get cleaned up.

The melted minie is nice, it's half melted. Enjoy.

Yes Merry Christmas to me for sure. Today I also got my FIRST and SECOND capped bust dimes! Now I have to figure out where I stuck them to get a picture. It was raining, but I had a "herd" of T-Netters up to my honey hole to look for new "hot spots". We did not find any more hot spots but cleaned up a lot of little lost relics. We found a new area of rose head nails, and everybody got something. Was a lot of fun. A couple of the other guy's finds blew my mind. I'm sure they will post them.

The ring is marked .925 and was made in Mexico. It was a fun couple of days.

Crazy cool old relics for sure. Not even sure what a rose head nail is? I reckon I have been tossing them into the garbage all these years! Love the nice crotal bell. Those two silvers down below are sweet. Somewhere they are on my hope to find before I die Bucket List. Not going to hold my breath though. You are a great hunter and true friend to the community. Waiting to see what your friends found.

Tired Rooster, that represented a lot of digging. First two capped dimes, from today, first crotal bell, first "rounds" and "triangles" from the knapsacks, and I love the genuine semi burnt wood from a 6th Corps camp. That's also my first sterling wedding ring and the first ring marked "Mexico". A lot of firsts.

Kurios, can you say "belt plate" and "huge crotal bell"? We all got maybe 5 keepers each today, but I am still in shock. One guy got a Walking half dollar, the site is STILL occupied, as in my friends live there. One guy got a very modern coin spill. 18th century through 21st. I even got a pulltab today, which for that site is unusual.

And a "rose head nail" is a hand forget nail. They were used here in the 18th century. By the 19th, nails were easier to make and while square nails were still used, and are today, automation took over and the hand made rose head nail became obsolete.

You are absolutely right crusader, I should have clarified and the nail going through it is about 1 1/4" long. My best guess was on a box or wagon.

Carolina Tom, four have been found on this site in the last year. It's 55 acres and we now have almost 100 man hours on the site and it still produces. It was getting pretty sparse, but this past week the farmer disced the corn and we could get the loops near the ground. I'm going over to a new area of permission on the same property a little later. Sun has to get all the way up first!

I’ve been following this, I’m on a text thread and have been receiving pics of the stuff. Amazing finds.

I’m into coins, so 2 capped at one time boggles my mind. Such an awesome piece of early US coinage.

If you are looking at the last photo with that buckle and flat iron with the nail through it, that is actually part of a McClellan saddle.
