Metal Detecting
Hey treasure hunters, I'm new to this site and just recently started hunting with a buddy that is an old pro. He has been showing me the ropes and getting great feed back as to the do's and the don't's of metal detecting. I went off on my own yesterday in Newport RI on one of thier beaches. This is the first ring that I have found and can't seem to get a handle on the metal that it is comprised of nor the stone that is set in it. I brought it to a jeweler and cleaned it a little. He told me it was not silver and maybe the stone was sapphire but was not sure. He did say it was old and took a guess at 100 years. Has anyone ever see a simular ring or could send me in the right direction to find out what the history might be associated with the ring?

Thanks... the new kid, Patrick

It looks like it may be possibly 10k gold? Or gold plated / filled? Sometimes 10k or lower graded gold will discolor after being in the ground. I changed the size of the pic.

Thanks for resizing...could not get a handle on that yet. Maybe resize the other pic too if not to much trouble, thanks
The jeweler said the black around the stone was possibly lead, he said they used that back in the day to set the stones. I found the ring in sand on the beach.

No problem. I'll have it up in a couple of minutes...

could you put up a few more pics - I'd like to see the underside of the shank where it appears,
to have a break , also some more pics of the stone , and the discolored areas below bezel
on the shank . Thanks ! Oh , did the jeweler acid test it ?- what was his reason for dismissing
it as silver ? Argentium. (did the piece register as high conductive to your MD. ?)

Ok , I just saw the earlier pics you put up - the stone appears to me to be either denim lapis ,
or possibly sodalite , both of these have the mottled blue and white seen here -( not seen in
high quality lapis lazuli .) Still no confidence as to what the metal is. Argentium.

Sorry about the size of the new pic, you will have to resize it again, first time using this format on this site. This is the last picture of the ring that I have tonite. I gave it to a friend who is buddies with a jeweler to try to get more info on it. I will take more photos tomorrow. The jewel did not perform an acid test, I went in and out of the store quickly and just asked him to clean it up a little. He was just guessing on the metal. I can tell you I placed a magnet to it and it did not stick.

I frankly don't see a century old piece here - this looks to be 1960's - 70's to me - sort of a
school crafts class feel to it - While the metal could be brass , the ring lacks the ornamental
detail that I associate with middle eastern or north african jewelry - just my "gut" Argentium.

no matter what its a cool looking ring

that is a very cool ring,

I'm stumped myself, I'll try to get more photos up tomorrow and may get some feedback from my friends jeweler buddy. Thanks for the insight tonight.

I'm no expert by any means but isn't that a spoon ring? Made from an actual spoon?

It's cool for sure

I have no Idea about the ring, but I was just thinking that by all the interest it has given you, you win either way!!! Nice ring! :icon_thumleft:

It sure looks like a spoon, there was a guy back in the day in this area that called himself "the spoonman" that sold spoon rings and they were made with sterling silver. The stone was almost always turquoise, I'll take a closer look in the morning, thanks for the imput, get back to you later with more pics too.
