take a better up close picture of it, take several at some oblique angles then get into a photo editor and play with highlights, shadows, brightness and contrast. I could almost read it with pic on left but need a better resolution photo than ones converted here.

I agree, it looks very old by the engraved script style. What is was at one time could be a challenge to solve. It could have been silver plate over copper at one time?. Maybe you could find more pieces of it at the location you found these?
