Another wintery detecting day. Just staying lucky I guess, the weather is up and down lately, and mostly down on detecting days!
Dressed for the weather and hit a couple of fields and made some typical finds, nothing noteworthy but I have the feeling it just might have been the last hunt for the year. I'm looking forward to getting back to some old favourites and finding some new fields in the spring!
Good luck out there fellow hunters, hopefully, if you haven't hit a great one this year, there's still a chance for you!

Yeah it's sure looking like we're done for this year, doesn't it? Let's hope for a fluke thaw that lasts a few more weeks anyways haha.

A couple of days of rain and some plus temps after a snow and we might get a few hours some day, and that's about all a fella can ask for this time of year

I'm using winter to catalog and take good pics of all my finds, do some electrolysis and watch Savage Family Diggers.

I could spend all winter cataloging and cleaning my accumulation of the past decades, but I could probably only take Ric Savage for about hour lol

Post up some of your pics when you get them done

I wont stop this winter...If I break my digger..I will replace it. I cannot stare at ground and not detect it. It might be hard work but at least I will be in shape in the spring haha!

Dude. You are hardcore!
In the days before I was a shovel guy I was a hand digger guy, I experienced many a blister on my palms trying to force a digger in the frozen ground , then blew through a couple of cheapo shovels, now it's good quality sturdy shovels that will punch through even the worst frost and ice

I salute your determination and wish you best of luck

I'd be happy with one those finds any day, then again it doesn't take much to beat a pack rivet and a couple horse shoes in frosty 3' corn stocks.

Man, I hate corn fields!
To find anything beating your coil around in the stalks is beyond me, put me out in the beans and I'm a happy guy!
It will only take one great spot and you'll forget how awful the corn is lol

I'd take a hunt like that right now...jews harp and old coins...hopefully we get a few freak day here and there...I remember a few years ago detecting Dec 23rd, so you never know right...here's for hoping!

Shame the season is so short up there for you all. It really should be for us here, for the opposite reason of the 100-110 temperatures. But I have hunted year round thus far here. I am not willing to take April through September off if there are finds to be made.

Congrats on your finds this season. I have enjoyed seeing your posts.

It's not unheard of getting out very late in the season, I remember IP and I hunting on NewYears Day many years ago

I think Romeo got at least a hunt every month two years ago didn't he?

Here's hoping!

I think I would so rather battle the cold for a hunt than sweat it out looking for relics any day!
Hunting year round would be nice though

Thank you and we'll have to hunt vicariously through you fellas down south there to help us get through the winter months and enjoy your posts til the spring thaw

I will keep hunting until I can't get a shovel in the ground anymore!!"

When the ground is semi-frozen I use an axe and a hammer and cut a square plug beating the axe into the ground with the hammer....works well. Glasses are handy also in case any steel comes off the axe...little half assed but it works well.

Haha
I heard of this method before, bad results too, buddy cut a fish scale clean in two!
He had to get better at pinpointing the target lol

Still looks like a nice day out your way for swinging a coil.

Yeah everything looks good for the next little bit , sadly I do have commitments and will out of town for a couple of weeks, hopefully when I get home an opportunity presents itself

I hope to check a field near my house that looks good , hopefully add to this years haul

Need to be rich enough to have a Winter house on the coast where it is warm and then you could detect year round. :icon_thumleft:

Living on the coast does have its advantages, that much is true, but if I could pick a coast for the winter it might be the east coast of England!

I'll get a pick axe before I quit. But it was -13 today in northern Ontario. hope the frost stays away.

Ok guys you're scaring me now! lol

I'm all for taking it down to the wire too but I've learned when to say when. I guess I used to think I was all about going til I couldn't anymore and I wouldn't give up no matter what. It does draw the fine line between obsession and addiction.

I can assure that when those coins and relics are locked up tight in the cold earth, they ain't going nowhere until you get back in the spring.

I will say its tough and I'm with ya, wishing I could go anytime the mood hits. And I'm sure shovelling snow doesn't cut it when you wish you were shovelling out coins and relics.

I don't even want to think of the season coming to an end. :crybaby2:
