Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

Hord of counterfeit early 14th century silver Prague groschen, found today in the Zemplén mountains of Eastern Slovak Republic. These are actually copper coins gilded with silver--two small chunks of silver were found in the same hole. They're not valuable, but it was really exciting to dig!!!

Okay everybody! Thanks for all the posts and constructive criticism!!!
After taking a closer look at some of the coins, I'm leaning toward the non-counterfeit side. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I scratched a couple of them while anxiously excavating--there is no underlying copper where scratched!!!!! Ergo....... :headbang:
Off they go to a very secure place

That is great News. Hell i'm excited for ya.
Get em checked out, and appraised, and then let us know exactly how great a find this way...

Hey Ddrgeorge, no criticism here - just a few of us giving our individual opinions, some more worthy than others ::).

You probably won't find a bunch of people more pleased for you than us if they turn out to be the genuine article and worth squillions - we just love this sort of thing - hearing the stories of finds and seeing the photos are what makes it so good here.

Your find was one of the more interesting ones, please let us know how it turns out. Nuggy

WOW! If you send them to me, I will 'authenticate' them for you. :tongue3:

Re: Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

Heck, I'm nominating for banner whether they a fake or not, but I would bet money they are real.

Re: Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

Weigh these coins and try to get a specific gravity measurement. I'm not so sure that I see circulation wear or softness in details from striking. The coins look good to me, but that doesnt mean that they are not counterfiet. Banner nomination either way...

Those lions are possibly the coolest representation I have seen on a middle age coin... Im going to have to look for one at a reasonable price:)

Re: Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

Thanks everyone for the kind words and for the opportunity to share my finds with all of you nice people :notworthy:
I have no intention of selling them either separate or together, so don't anyone get their hopes up! :laughing9:
It's amazing to just sit here and hold them, look at them and think how they got there, who lost them, what they've seen since then, etc (But I know most of you feel the same about the stuff you've found--that's part of the thrill of our addiction!!! :tongue3:)
Once again, THANKS!!!!! :hello:

Re: Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

Jo napot. One thing seems to be clear - even if the coins are counterfeit, they are not copper based. Either real or there is another possibility - heavily plated lead. Lead was often used to give counterfeit coins some weight. Anyway it's a banner find :headbang:

Re: Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

I wanna see the silver chunks ?? ??? :dontknow: :icon_scratch:

Keep @ It and HH !! ;D :D

Re: Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

that darker layor on the coins is defiantly silver tarnish, you have solid silver coins

Re: Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

They look to be authentic as I think these coins were too thin to last that long in the ground if they were counterfeit. I have found one Groschen and yours look better than mine. I also think it is interesting that I have a Czechoslovakian coin with the same lion on it dated 2000, 700 years with the same marking. Congrats and HH, Mike

Re: Counterfeit 14th century Bohemian "silver"

We returned to this site yesterday with my friend and his XP G-Maxx. Nothing more found other than the typical WW2 battlefield junk (spent Mauser shell casings, russian 23mm shell, schrapnel galore!!). From a coinage standpoint disappointing, but we enjoyed ourselves and the nice climate in the woods! :tongue3:
