It does not look counterfeit to me. I would just call it a badly eaten-up copper. ;D Nice historical dig nonetheless.

Thanks for your reply, why almost double the 10.9 gram weight of a draped?
Also, lower reading than a copper, & gray color inside corrosion.

Over 18 grams for a 29mm copper! It most certainly would be counterfeit being near double the weight. It must be lead, and is a pretty cool find.

Cool find with some mystery :icon_thumleft:

For sure there's other counterfeits out there but I'm not sure how much interest there is in them. I Know George coppers, Spanish, and French Colonial coins have some serious collectors, but don't know if the same holds true for counterfeit large cents. Early US coins isn't my main interest so maybe I just haven't seen it.

cool find, my friend got one back in the summer but he's was pewter. I think there a great find I would like to get one.

That's a cool find. There is a probably a much better story behind that coin being a counterfeit than if it was real. You gotta wonder how many times these counterfeits passed hands? and if the passer ever got caught? and what happened to him?

I found an 1841 lead counterfeit LC. But, have never seen a draped counterfeit.

Congrats on a great find.

Thanks Brian,
Great to hear about another lead LC! must have been pretty tough to pass considering the weight difference, some Colonial currency designed by Benjamin Franklin was marked 'to counterfeit is death'

Very cool find. :icon_thumright:

Better than the real deal in my opinion. :headbang:
