Found this counterstamped item near the remains of a small rock foundation. The house does not show up on an 1850 map or later, so I think it is old. The only other things I found were nails and shotgun shell headstamps; very little modern trash. It is 1 inch in diameter and has no other markings or images that I can see other than the WS 5. It does not feel like a US large cent, though it appears to be a coin. What do you think, counterstamped coin or just a tag of some sort? Any guesses on age or meaning of WS 5? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Looks like a counter or tool check.
also could be a token from a mercantile
Cool find

Huntindog....Thank you for the interesting tool check suggestion. I looked those up, and it seems they typically have a hole in them as a means to attach. My object lacks that hole. I am leaning more towards the mercantile token idea, which I too thought a possibility. I am hoping others chime in with similar ideas. Thanks again!

It would appear to be that the treasure will be located at 5 degrees south west of the spot you found it? Lol

Looks very close to a large cent (with counterstamps) Have you scratched at the surface with a toothpick to try and reveal any hidden details? ... I would be tempted too

Thanks for the comments. I have given it a toothpick cleaning, but think I will get a little more aggressive, as I really have nothing to lose on this one.

The 5 reminds me of a shield nickel, but with no other details...
So the style of the number tells me time period of 1860-80 or so....

Thanks! You're right, the style of that "5" is very similar to the sheild nickel. Whatever this object is, perhaps it was stamped around the same time those nickels were produced.
