The Cannon Ball , I Would have been Just Labled it as A Cool Find & Posted it Here Never to a Museum unesss I Wanted them to Have it.
& Money Wasn't even a Consideration.

Yep, if ya find something valuable you need to keep your lips zipped. Otherwise
some agency of the gov't with more money and lawyers than you is going to
screw you out of it.

I view some of these stories with skepticism. That said, this brings up a moral dilemma that detectorists sometimes face. Do you report it, or keep it for yourself? I'm mixed about this too.

I've found two diamond rings over the years, and both were worth a lot of sentimental value, if not monies. In both cases, I was able to find the owners and return them. I was offered a reward from one owner, which I refused, but I did get a kiss of a lifetime! That notwithstanding, I wonder how I might feel (morally) if I found a cache of gold coins? I suspect (if folks here were honest) a number of us have been tempted to maintain the thought... 'Finders keeper, losers weepers'. A few quarters in the park is one thing, but a cache of gold....? Hum?

How would you go about finding the owner or such a thing? Every person will say “yes” to a gold coin and “is this yours”.

I found So many mainly class rings from 30's 40's With initials, gold / silver I posted a Weekly Lost & found in the Local paper. sometimes there were around 10 listed at one time. i got calls from so called relatives. I didn't argue for proof, I just Hoped they were as honest as me on jewelry

the diamond rings had no initials .

coins, money of all types, ? today I Found 2 extremely wrinkled dollar bills on the water dispencer and a dime in the change tray,
no different to me then a chest of gold coins.

Over the years I have been detecting in a park and the rug rats are numerous at times. I remember digging an old gold ring that was down about 5 inches and this one said "That's mine, I lost it-so give it back!"
My knee jerk reply-Get Stuffed. ( being polite here)
Greed starts early in life it seems.
