So, I'm home for a couple of weeks. Had as much fun in Hyannis as I could stand.
I'm getting the boat ready for sea as the Admiral and I are escaping dry land for the holidays. We are going south, may end up somewhere in the Key's.
My boat has been ignored for a few months so I was shaking out the sails and basically going over everything at the dock. It's better to find problems there than underway.
My jib, the headsail, is a roller furling. So, I started to unroll it just to check everything and these little brown splotches started hitting the deck. Much to my surprise they were little brown bats. They found a space in the rolled up sail and called it home.
I was somewhat mortified because I thought I may have hurt a couple of them when they hit the deck...
I got a bucket and but a towel in the bottom and collected 4 of the little guys. A couple were still hanging on the sail, still asleep. I guess it takes a lot of wake up a bat.
The others were in the bottom of the bucket and inside the boat resting comfortably. I could see they were still breathing and when I propped up a stick I got them to hang on it upside-down and they seemed happy.
I had to stand guard on the deck, it's 4 pm and the hawks and owls and such might like a free tasty meal. I couldn't roll them back up without crushing them, so the watch (with a cold corona) was on duty.
As dusk approached the two little guys on the sail started stirring and eventually flew off.
The little guy's in the bucket finally got up and went to work eating our local bug population, so all was right again, and I was feeling better.
This morning all the bats were gone, having found someplace else to roost for the night.
Heading out in a few days, back the second week of Jan.
Ahoy~
