Relic Hunting
Dman was playing Ebenezer Scrooge in his store and still on crutches today but Tenn. Josh (third member of the Tennessee Trio) was busting to go relic hunting after working 21 days straight. We met up and hunted a Gen. John Hunt Morgan Camp. It was cloudy, high of 45 degrees, and the soil was saturated with moisture. The signals were mostly 10 inches and deeper.
Josh stepped out of the truck, walked about 10 ft., and dug a Gardner at 11 inches with his F75 as shown in the first pic. I made a picture of him as this was the first Gardner he had ever dug despite the many hunts he has been on with Dman and myself.
Later in the day, I got a faint signal with my F75. When I popped out the plug I saw a .69 cal. round ball staring at me as shown in the third pic.
Josh had the 3 Best Finds:
.577 cal. Enfield bullet with "57" in the base (His 3rd from that camp)
Iron Ball Puller and it was DEEP
Carved .58 cal. 3 ring bullet that looks very similar to the .69 cal. carved acorn bullet I dug this fall. The top looks somewhat unfinished and Josh theorized that one soldier saw the acorn bullet I dug and tried to carve one like it. Who knows which came first but the two carved bullets were dug about 100 yards apart.
I have a little more research to do on a couple of my relics and if they turn out to be exciting, I'll update this post. We had a good day for a 4.5 hour hunt in a good ole Confederate Camp. HH, Quindy.

My CW Finds to date in 2011= 334

Read the update-the relic that is pinched together above the bullets on the upper right is the top piece of a KENTUCKY button!!! Thanks to Buckleboy for figuring out the gilted part is actually the underside of the top part. I knew if anyone would know about KY buttons, it would be him. Thanks BuckleElf!!

Re: CSA Cavalry Troops Left Tenn. Josh and I Christmas Presents Under The Trees!!

looks like a nice haul. You all are driving me crazy because I want to go hunting so bad. Maybe in a few weeks I will be able to get back out there and show you and Josh how to find some good stuff. LOL Congrats on the nice relics and I missed being there.

This is Crazy!! Look at the folded up bottle cap looking piece on the upper right of our combined finds for the day. The first pic shows what it looked like when I dug it except I unfolded it a little. I thought I saw some gilt and showed it to Josh. He said it looked like an inverted button too with no back on it. We thought maybe an eagle button at best.
I like to passed out when I cleaned it. It's a Kentucky State button and Morgan and most of his troops camped there were from Kentucky. This is the best pic I could get but it's an inverted KY pre-war button. I bet I can get one of the relic repairers I wrote the W & E article about to fix it for me. What Next?? HH, Quindy.

Alway's check your find's twice Quindy ;D Never know what'll show up!!!! Excellent dig's guy's :icon_thumright:

Quindy,

Actually, what you have is the top portion of a three-piece KY button. The design is not inverted. The top of the button is what you posted in the next to last photo. You are looking at the underside of it in the last photo with all the gilding, which was probably protected from the elements by the back, which has been knocked off by the plough at some point. Unlike the normal eagle buttons, which appear to have only been gilded on their outer sides, the 3-piece buttons were gilded all over, inside and out.

The drapery and window should be on the left hand side of the KY button, not the right. So the next to last photo is the top of the button--and careful cleaning, perhaps with aluminum jelly, should reveal some design on that side too. I am hoping that there is some gilding on that side as well, as these buttons were well made and sturdy, and well gilded too.

That is a great find--and a BIG congratulations on your early Christmas present!

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Very nice finds..........

Outstanding Guys! :hello2:

Great job guys!! Sweet saves there Quindy!

a lot of lead carving out in that TN region :icon_scratch: and the KY button did look like a bottle cap ... you guys almost didn't get that one but once again experience and wisdom save the day  I said it once and I'll say it again , TN3 " is a force to be reckoned with ! " :laughing7: Joyful Christmas and Happy & Healthy 2012

If I had known that button was still there I would have went with you guys!!!!!!!! Good job BUT....... that place is said to be "cleaned out". Dang, I'd bet you could do pretty good in ANY old camp. Once again, great job. Tennessee digger

Believe me, we missed you Doug. Josh especially missed you when it was time to pay for our very late lunch-LOL. Hang in there as the Tennessee Trio will reunite for several hunts in January once more. Quindy.

That bullet does look like your acorn bullet.
Didn't you say that the troops that were at that camp had an acorn insignia?
Maybe that's why they are popping up there?
Rob, there is no record of U.S. occupation at that site but Morgan's Cavalry raided many Union sites and foraging partries to "procure" supplies, clothing, and weapons. The U.S. 14th Army Corps was in the area but did not adopt the acorn as a corps symbol until over a year after this camp was abandoned. CS lead reads less on the F75 display than U.S. lead. I know my acorn bullet showed a "47" on the F75 display at 5-6 inches depth and a .69 cal. 3 ring Yankee bullet consistenly reads "57" or "58" as I dug some this week. Thanks my friend, Quindy.

Joe, the button top read like a button or small pistol ball at "34" instead of a "68-72" as a bottle cap would. Thanks, MC & HNY, Quindy.

Again, thanks for your expertise Will. That's the first KY button that I have seen and held in my hands. Must we call you Dr. Buckleboy after August? Hoping 2012 is the year we finally hunt together my friend, Quindy.

Thanks RR3. Just got lucky again and that's a big part of hunting for CW relics. Everything was just right yesterday I guess. You have found a lot of treasure this year so post the highlights on the "2011" forum. Happy Holidays & Hunting, Quindy.

MM, that was a crazy deal to say the least. BB was correct about the button top being folded up and protecting the gilt on the undersiside of the button. I dug it very near where I recovered a 1853 Half Dime several years ago in the tent lines. I know how you like Half Dimes-LOL. Thanks, Q.

Breezie, I'm going to have this one cleaned by by a pro as any state buttons are rare in the early Morgan camps. I'l post it when again whgen it's restored. MC, Q.

As you already know Donnie, you and Julia are welcome to hunt with us anytime. Josh called Friday am and was busting to get out and dig. I'm sure glad that he twisted my arm and we went-LOL. MC , Quindy.

You guys always find some neat stuff, Quindy! Very nice batch of Pre-Christmas goodies!

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas, and you have my best wishes for a Happy, Healthy, and Fun-filled New Year.
Maybe I will see you on my way to Texas at some point.

Awesome finds Quindy. That KY button is sweet. I am going to try to get out next weekend if the others can go. We have a new camp to hunt once we can get everybody together. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and may 2012 be your best year.

Sweet finds. I really like that carved bullet you snagged there. :headbang:

you did a great hunt.the ky.button is awesome and that does look like an acron bullet.i know you are killing Dman. i will be glad when he can get back with you.i don't know why but it seems like some of the better finds from a camp are the last to be found.hope the three of you have the very best of Christmas.a friend of mine called me to tell me what a good deal he got at Dman's store.we are having some hard times here with things going on in my sons life. was hoping to go hunting this afternoon but seems like i will be going to movies with grandkids so you keep hunting if i can't go then i look forward to your post.

Great finds guys,
moist ground and deep seekin machines sure can bring alive a so called hunted out site. Any State button is a very nice find, but with Southern Soldiers carrying them it sure adds a special moment to our search of history.

Congrats and Merry Christmas

Same to you Rob and try to leave about half a day to visit and hunt when you come down I-40. Thanks for all your expertise on identifying my iron junk this year. If you or Kuger (Cody) can't figure out that a cavalry piece is, it ain't much. Christmas wishes to you my friend, Quindy.

Thanks Bill and from your state to boot. That's the only KY button known to come from thst camp and a Texas cuff is the only other state button. I'll get it professionally straightened and cleaned and will amend this post. MC Bud, Quindy.
