Just discovered some interesting information on the "Cheer Up" bottle (1936). Notice in the ingredients, Lithia is mentioned. Lithia (Lithium Citrate) is a mood stabilizing drug. It is prescribed today for people who are bi-polar. However in large quantities it can be toxic, leading to seizures, renal failure and coma.

American beverage makers were forced to remove Lithia from their products in 1948.

Similar but different.

Coca-Cola was named after it's two key ingedients, Coca leaves and Kola nuts. Coca leaves contained small amounts of cocaine, the syrup of which made up the original formula, about 9 milligrams of cocaine per bottle! Concern about addiction to cocaine in the early 1900's led to the Harrison Act of 1914 which banned the use of cocaine in non prescription products.

Coca-Cola then started using "spent" Coca leaves through a process that extracted the cocaine from the leaves. They still do this today.

Zing it did. In 1886 when Coca-Cola was first invented by a former Confederate Army officer, it was touted as a medicine that would "cure all nervous afflictions, headache, neuralgia, hesteria, meloncholy and malaise." It quickly became very popular.
