CULT detectors

The other day I saw someone driving one of those old VW Bugs and I thought about the following that vehical had (still has). Somebody said: "It's so ugly it's cute."

This thread is not about cars but detectors. Detectors that have always had a big following. We call these "cult detectors."

There are many that fit into this category. For years to come, people will be using them even though there may be much better machines avaiable.

Ya know this is a great topic.. and I agree on the so called cult detectors, which I also think alot of us have gone thru.. I know I have.. but, on the other hand, I am not well versed or have enough knowledge to even post a machine here as I am still learning, but I will follow the posts from the seasoned hunters here..

I know I have.. but, on the other hand, I am not well versed or have enough knowledge to even post a machine here as I am still learning, but I will follow the posts from the seasoned hunters here..

Oh yes, the old Metrotech!

I've communicated with Gary about the UK Sabre following and I guess it includes him. They juice it up someway. I'd guess adding a signal enhancement amplifier? Whatever.

I heard that in England they now limit digging to 3 inches. Someone on another forum wrote this recently. I wonder how the heck they'd enforce that?

I used several of those detectors Gary lists and they were pretty good. I really liked the lower mellow tone of the original Sabre.

In my experience the new Silver uMax has them all beat in depth.

Call it cult detector group, vw bug group (btw, I know a you fellow -30ish- that will pull your bug engine and replace it... drive away time, 3 hours). I'm getting away from the point. The point is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! A metal detector you know is like a woman you've known a long time. A younger chic (new machine) might get the blood pumping once in a while but the one you know best is where you keep going back to. TTC

A guy over on the official Tesoro forum posted the 3 inch thing. Your never know, anybody can post anything.

Arado 120b? Hum, never heard of it.

Badger, I don't mean to get off topic, but I just have to say it is great to have you back. I see you have been back a few days, but I just found your new posts. I have missed you, welcome back my friend.

Your posts, findings, and observations are one of the reasons I now use two Sovereign GTs, one customized for the surf and one for the land.............Thank you sir........

Not so much a cult detector, more like an obscure one, I have a Vantage AD-14 prototype. I don't know of nor never heard of any other one in existence, but i'm sure they are out there somewhere. It's pretty deep too considering it's age.

I also have a Tanner Electronic Systems Metal Snooper! You need an AM radio to hear the detector detect.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned the old Compass 100 kHz detectors (non motion). They still have a place today detecting iron infested areas and a few guys still use them. Here's a pic of my Yukon 77B Professional.

I was wondering when we'd get a Compass posted.

It's too bad that years ago I didn't know how good they were. I used another major brand back in those years that was okay but today I find out Compass was the deepest machine. I sure wish I had known this.

In our area I don't think I ever saw a Compass detector.

This is TerryC... funny you should shoe a compass. JimB's main machine is a compass. We used it today at a park then he "posed" for a pic with a GARRETT! Ask him to post a pic of it. It is much older than the one posted by Idaho, even though it looks to be the same machine. I think we should do a pic show of the oldest, scrapiest, ugliest machine still bringing in the stuff. TTC

My mentor used Compass machines--and he started hunting back in the 60's... I was AMAZED at their depth and longevity. These were the REAL workhorses of MDing...they were Top Notch.

Not sure if you would class this in the category of a cult machine, a bit of a first in England around the mid 1970’s. My daughter with my Garrett Groundhog, around 1978? I had the ADS ? later on.

The Arado was a machine that set the standard in the early 1970’s to which a lot of manufactures never equalled. So it could not be copied Paul Spencer encapsulated part of the PCB in epoxy. Second photograph.

This to my knowledge this was model the line up:-

Arado 45 and 65 then the 95. (IBA)

Arado 120 and 120b then the 130 (All metal)

Arado TR80 (?) (TR)

Just to give you some idea of price, my 120b cost me in 1978 around $500 approx.

Terry, I still use a Compass Relic & Coin Scanner. It's got a depth mod done to it from Keith Wills. This is a very good machine with a super accurate analog meter and will keep up with the high end detectors made today. I use this as my main machine and also use the original Minelab Sovereign (the one with the iron mask toggle).
