Okay you guys, I sure hope you can pinpoint this little cut coin or token. This one might be hard.

The size of a U.S Penny, looks like copper and a bit thinner than a penny. It has an RY as a partial word with a wreath on one side and the other side has a horse facing left with some lettering of WA and some others that I just cannot make out. Found at an 1880 farm.

Also, how old is this lock do you think? Any info on that would be great. Thanks everyone. jgas

jgas, it seems to be a Civil War token, and even half of one should be fairly easy to identify by type if you scan the front and back for us.

Good call! :icon_thumright:

Based on the described lettering, I'm guessing that it may be the patriotic variety cataloged as #175/232a, which depicts Washington on horseback, bears a wreath on the reverse, and has the word WA(R) on one side and (COUNT)RY on the other.

The complete token would look something like this. I couldn't find a good set of photos of #175/232a, so am substituting these obverse and reverse dies from other, quite similar varieties.

The lock dates from the mid to late 1800's. Is there a maker's mark on either the case or the drop (keyhole cover)?

Thanks 4-H, but the Civil War token part was easy, Identifying the type was the hard part and all credit goes to PBK for this one.

WOW....You guys just blow me away with the identification. Too bad it was not a whole token. What would something like that be worth if it were in decent whole shape??

As far as the lock goes. It has no makers mark anywhere that I can see.

Once again Tnet guru's have solved this one for me. A big thanks Johnnyi.....You Da Man!!!! Thanks buddy. jgas

Thanks PBK. You hit it right on the head with that description. That is definitely it. After closer inspection under the loop and magnifier and can make out the word First as well as War...The horses head fits perfectly. Once again you guys nailed it. Nice, very nice....Thanks again everyone....jgas

Glad we could help, Jgas!

#175/232a is a fairly scarce variety, rated R6—no more than 75 known. Kanzinger's price guide (2002) lists it at $50 in Fine condition; Extremely Fine, $75.
