Hello All,

Rodeo Recon and I headed out to a picket post site of mine and hit the fields hard this afternoon. First off, I found the back to a CW cuff button (two piece). Unfortunately the front was completely gone :( but it does bear a Scovill backmark, along with another word I can't quite make out. (Anybody have a list of Scovill backmarks for cuff buttons during the CW years?) Anyway, we started diggin the usual .69 cal three-ring minies. Rodeo was cleanin' house on the minies, and stoked to be finding these nice, hefty bullets.

We also got two .69 cal round balls from the site:

I then got an "iffy" signal in the picket post field. After I cut the plug the signal still wasn't that good. I broke the plug in half and swiped the plug sideways under my coil and the machine sounded off--a GREAT signal this time! I broke the plug in half once again, and a coin dropped out. The coin had been perfectly on edge in the cornfield. When I saw it, I was expecting an Indian Head since there was so much dirt on it. I quickly realized that it was WILVER! Side note: As much CW hunting as I have done, I have never found a CW-era coin in a CW camp. Diggin buddies have--and I have frequently been standing nearby and watched them pull old silver out of CW sites--but I have never been lucky enough to walk across one. Here are the photos of the coin:

I couldn't believe it! It was a Seated Dime. I couldn't tell much about it until I got it home. Here are the before and after photos:

This one is easily the highest-grade seated coin I have recovered in the past decade--Now that's a SWEET coin! :)
Here are the before and after photos of all our finds from the short hunt. I put some of the old nails we found in there, although we dug quite a bit of other iron out of the site--gotta try for that cannister shot! (Kindafoundabuckle already found one in this field)

A special thanks to Rodeo Recon for taking such amazing photos on this hunt! Bravo! It was great to hunt with you again, bud!!

So far we've found over 50 pieces from this picket post--making it the most productive one I've ever found. We've gotten six "mushrooms" from shoulder scales, a strap end, half a button :-\ , the Seated Dime ;D , a knapsack hook, a cannister shot, a tiny brass buckle, many pieces of camp lead not included in the total, a pistol ball, a sword belt hanger (?), and over thirty-five dropped, pulled, charred, or carved .69 cal. minies and round balls. The site has been quite exceptional so far--and there's still more to find. While hunting some small CW campsites I have found much less than what I've already found here.

Regards,

i have to field clean some....as delicate as i can..i keep a pill bottle with me and use it even for wheats,, but even wrapped in paper towel shreads, i'd be worried the sand left on there would scratch...

I use a pill bottle filled with cotton balls. The first thing I find goes in the bottom layer, then I work my way up the bottle--each find separated by a cotton ball layer. The bottle itself is a little larger in diameter than a silver dollar, and probably six or seven inches in height.

Well...They're realistic...because they are! >:( >:( >:(

Seriously, I understand what you mean though. I always try to make posts as I like to read posts--and hope that others will like the same format I do.
