Hello All,

Rodeo Recon and I headed out to a picket post site of mine and hit the fields hard this afternoon. First off, I found the back to a CW cuff button (two piece). Unfortunately the front was completely gone :( but it does bear a Scovill backmark, along with another word I can't quite make out. (Anybody have a list of Scovill backmarks for cuff buttons during the CW years?) Anyway, we started diggin the usual .69 cal three-ring minies. Rodeo was cleanin' house on the minies, and stoked to be finding these nice, hefty bullets.

We also got two .69 cal round balls from the site:

I then got an "iffy" signal in the picket post field. After I cut the plug the signal still wasn't that good. I broke the plug in half and swiped the plug sideways under my coil and the machine sounded off--a GREAT signal this time! I broke the plug in half once again, and a coin dropped out. The coin had been perfectly on edge in the cornfield. When I saw it, I was expecting an Indian Head since there was so much dirt on it. I quickly realized that it was WILVER! Side note: As much CW hunting as I have done, I have never found a CW-era coin in a CW camp. Diggin buddies have--and I have frequently been standing nearby and watched them pull old silver out of CW sites--but I have never been lucky enough to walk across one. Here are the photos of the coin:

I couldn't believe it! It was a Seated Dime. I couldn't tell much about it until I got it home. Here are the before and after photos:

This one is easily the highest-grade seated coin I have recovered in the past decade--Now that's a SWEET coin! :)
Here are the before and after photos of all our finds from the short hunt. I put some of the old nails we found in there, although we dug quite a bit of other iron out of the site--gotta try for that cannister shot! (Kindafoundabuckle already found one in this field)

A special thanks to Rodeo Recon for taking such amazing photos on this hunt! Bravo! It was great to hunt with you again, bud!!

So far we've found over 50 pieces from this picket post--making it the most productive one I've ever found. We've gotten six "mushrooms" from shoulder scales, a strap end, half a button :-\ , the Seated Dime ;D , a knapsack hook, a cannister shot, a tiny brass buckle, many pieces of camp lead not included in the total, a pistol ball, a sword belt hanger (?), and over thirty-five dropped, pulled, charred, or carved .69 cal. minies and round balls. The site has been quite exceptional so far--and there's still more to find. While hunting some small CW campsites I have found much less than what I've already found here.

Regards,

Buckle,
What a fantastic post. Congrats to you on the beauty dime. Super!
You got some great CW relics there.
What is that small clip looking piece below the dime in the last picture? I think I may have one of those too.
Any chance of getting a close-up of the back of the Scovill button? I have a few button books, and may be able to look it up for you.
Thanks for sharing. Great pictures, & great post!

Well heck, at least you get asked Tom. Cool weather is prevailing now...whew! Maybe BB will invite me to go someday or at least get together and share some research. :)

Hmmm maybe we are hunting the same spot ;). I hunted a corn field on Monday afternoon and got a .69, 2 fired enfields, a .44.musketball , a nice melted camp lead and a J hook. Hmmm maybe you be follow'n me? Huh?

The answer to what the clip is...the answer is farther up in my replies ::)

The other word is "Waterbury," I think.

Thank you for the kind reply,

Congrats on that beautiful dime! That's one you'll remember for a long time.

nice dime dude !!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D real sweet piece there... :) :) :) :)

i have to field clean some....as delicate as i can..i keep a pill bottle with me and use it even for wheats,, but even wrapped in paper towel shreads, i'd be worried the sand left on there would scratch...

works both ways i guess.....

Congratulations on such a fine looking Seated dime BB.

Hard to imagine a bullet that size impacting a person at such low velocity. Even harder to imagine trying to save a person who had been shot with one. That was a truly brutal conflict.

Hell yeah, bro! You did awesome! While you were digging Seated wilver, I was checking out crafts. Dang! LMAO

Keep hitting that site, bud! Hmmmmm...maybe there is a half dime there.

Hmmmm...maybe a DOLLAR! :o :D PACO found an 1842 Seated dollar two years ago, so it is feasible.

WTG BB!!! The seated dime is a pretty one and I am sure a very nice feeling is had when you look at it. A very good mixture of finds, now where is that Large Cent!

He found Large cent-era wilver!

Great finds Buckleboy!

I too find it hard to resist field cleaning so I found a way to field clean and not harm the coin. I carry a small Nalgene container about the diameter of a silver dollar and about an inch deep. I put two 100% cotton pads (kind used to remove makeup and cut to fit) in the container and fill it with a mild liquid detergent cut with just a little water. Not enough to lower the viscosity of the detergent (it's better if the solution is a little "thick" but you need some water for it to clean). I rinse the coin with a stream of distilled water (no rubbing - just a stream from a squeeze bottle) to get off the "big pieces" and the stuff not attached to the coin and place the coin in the container between the two cotton pads and put it in my pocket. I walk around with it for an hour or so, remove it and rinse with distilled water from squeeze bottle, and blot dry with another 100% cotton pad. The cotton is not hard enough to scratch the coin, it catches any dirt in the detergent that might scratch the coin, and they are cheap enough to replace for each coin. I then examine the coin to see if I can tell anything about it and then put it in a holder to take out of the field. If it doesn't clean up enough to see detail, I leave it alone and wait until I can try other methods. So far this was worked great on both gold and silver.

I guess I am just too impatient and had to find a way to at least see something while I was in the field.

Nice dime!

(Do I see tooth marks on that one bullet?!?!?) j/k ;D

Relics and Seated Wilver!

What a treat! I know you're smiling!

Well...They're realistic...because they are! >:( >:( >:(

Seriously, I understand what you mean though. I always try to make posts as I like to read posts--and hope that others will like the same format I do.

All the Best,

BB
