CW Zouave Bayonet Piece from 1800's House

...delivers an unexpected surprise.

Headed out to the 1800's house I worked with Modern Miner yesterday. NC Joe and CJ Tuffy joined me in the fantastic weather for some quality diggin'. Again, the landowners were just fantastic, sharing more stories of growing up on the land and the history of the property itself. While we are yet to score some 1800's copper/silver, we all pulled a nice variety of oddball items from the grounds. NC pulled some silver and a beautiful old costume ring, CJ pulled yet another tootsie toy from the same area I was working yesterday and I pulled a nice costume broach along with the ever present iron items.
The unexpected surprise however, really made my day that much sweeter. Next to what used to be an old egg house (there was a poultry farm on the property many years ago), I dug what looked like the butt end of an old bayonet. Although it's pretty mangled, it's still obvious what it was at one time. It looked similar to an old WWII bayonet my father had when I was younger - until I cleaned it up. After getting it home, I did the soap and water treatment with a scrub brush to get that cursed "Carolina Clay" out of all the nooks and crannies. I spent about an hour going through different pics of WWII bayonets and WWI bayonets but could not find a match. I did not think it could be older but I searched CW era bayonets and there it was - an "almost" perfect match - U.S. Army Model 1861 Ames Bayonet (http://www.snyderstreasures.com/pages/cdv.htm). There were quite a few that looked very close to the same handle design but this was the closest. Even though it's but a small "chunk" of what was once a beautiful piece of steel and brass, it has history to it and that's what I love the most about this obsession. If anyone has any more info on similar blades and/or the one listed above, please fill me in. Thanks again and keep on swingin'...

I posted a bunch of pics trying to give the best views possible after I lightly cleaned it. Will include more after a thorough cleaning...

Last pic is what it would look like complete...

Great Find Andy. That's the handle to a CW Sword Bayonet. You guys had fun once you got away from the "Jinx". HH, Quindy.

Andy,
Don't listen to Quindy, he's old. If you don't believe it I can show you a picture of him battling a dinosaur. -Dug-

Thanks Bug. Yeah, the ground here is crazy. It's a heck of a job trying to get the "stain" out/off of anything with lots of nooks and crannies in it... :D

Thanks a lot Quindy! Yeah, if you ever get to hunt with Doug and I, be sure to wear a metal helmet ( a big old strainer with aluminum foil will work) around Doug. He's got some kind of luck magnet that will absorb everyone's "diggin' luck" within a fifty foot radius... :D

I'm curious about that myself Noodle. It was only about 10 inches from the egg house (about three feet from the door). I'll be hitting that area hard the next time out because I'd like to see if I can at least recover the rest of the handle including the hilt. At the very least, it does tell that someone from the original family had fought in the war (or had a family member that did) and "acquired" the bayonet from a Union soldier. Whoever knows for sure doubtfully is around anymore, but the imagination can run wild with different scenarios on how they came into possession of the original piece... :icon_thumright:

As far as how it ended up in the condition it is now (in pieces), who knows? I could see some chicken heads rollin' from it though...LOL :laughing9:
