By "old coins" do you mean like seateds and barbers? Or are you ok with just common grab bag silver coins (40s/50s type stuff) ? The best place to learn-the-ropes for common silver is: Yards of post-WWII sprawl homes. Ie.: homes built starting in the late '40s to mid 1950s. They're old enough to have silver, yet new enough not to be trashed out . The post war (1950s) economy was prosperous, so those yards can have some easy pickens silver. Yes that means you'll need to do some door-knocking, or catching people-on-their-front porch so-to-speak.

Cut your teeth at easy-yards like that, before trying to progress to worked out parks, or exotic things like stage stops, ruins, etc... in your quest for older seateds and barbers.

As for the "rings" part of your question: Go to swim beaches as the best odds at jewelry. Because if you try to "be a hero" and get gold rings from junky urban blighted parks, you might end up pulling your hair out. Versus swim beaches which a) tend to have more jewelry to begin with, and b) Let's face it: digging in sand is easier :)
