The Political Football That is Recycling

Hi all. After reading in a local newspaper ( not the link posted above ) about a garbage truck having it's load start smoldering in transit, and making the determination the smoke and fire was caused by a 9 volt battery being discarded in the trash, I decided to ask a friend to build me a nice little storage box. At any one time, I usually carry at least 8 AA batteries and one or two 9 volts in my vehicle for detecting use. He brought me the finished product today. I am quite pleased with the result. The core of the box is solid cherry and he used a nicely contrasting maple plywood to surround the cherry. What do you think of his handiwork?

Nice piece of handiwork. He is an artist of the wood. I have seen trash trucks come into the dump on fire from someone throwing coals away.....

Very nice indeed. I keep an inverter in my car/truck so I can recharge extra 1.5V if needed.

Looks like a really nice box, but seems a bit overkill to me.
One of those small fishing lure-type clear plastic storage boxes would have worked just as well (and wouldn't be as heavy).

While it's possible for a 9V dry cell battery to start a fire, garbage trucks usually have all sorts of combustibles in them.
As you know, many materials will self-ignite when brought together under the right conditions.
Seems a bit unrealistic that a particular 9V battery could be positively determined (no pun intended) to be the root cause of the fire, but I guess stranger things have happened.

It's not uncommon for garbage trucks to catch fire. Often, they will dump their contents right in the street to avoid damaging the vehicle.
Probably easier to put out the fire that way too?

That is Battery storage art! Very nice!

In case someone doesn't know....If you drop a lithium battery(and maybe others?) Get it outside and let it sit for a while. I had one start reacting and like an idiot decided to put it up to my nose to take a wiff(first reaction without thinking) to see if that is where the smell was coming from. Bad, Very Bad choice! Within about 10 to 20 mins the worst headache ever, and heart attack like pains. Don't make the same mistake! :laughing7:

Absolutely it would have worked just as the burlap bag in the pic below hides the woman's nakedness as well as a beautiful dress.

Now thats a battery box with style !

Nice box... well done!

Many moons ago when deer hunting in MI. I had a 9-volt "problem". In Dec. I'm 20ft. up in a tree archery hunting. Temp was COLD... (5-10 degrees F.) I'm trying out my new electric socks powered with a 9-volt battery. They worked great. I put a spare 9-volt in my pants pocket in case I needed it. Then I put on a snowmobile suit and a pair of wool pants. I'm standing in the tree and my left front thigh starts to itch. Then it starts to itch pretty bad... I'm moving around to try and quell the itch because I can't scratch it. After another 30 seconds I've gone beyond an itch to... my damn thigh feels like it's on FIRE! I hung up the bow, took off my one glove and started undoing my outer belt. Down go the wool pants. Now I'm unzipping the suit and my thigh is really burning. I reach into my pocket and it was like picking up a hot coal. The change in my pocket had caused a dead short on the battery. That battery got so hot it burned my thigh and I had long johns on also!!!! I must of looked so stupid stripping on that little platform in that frigid weather.

Nice battery box!
Your friend did great.
Maybe in time you can cover the lid with war nickles...:laughing7:

I do not see were a wood box would keep from catching fire if the battery went up in flames ? And i agree with Anduril it seems like a bit of overkill in size and weight ...

I know not everyone agrees with me...someone has to be wrong. Congrats on being chosen!:laughing7:
The point of the wooden box is : it is not going to allow a short across the 9 volt terminals. Surely you know that much about electricity? As far as weight goes...I ain't weak yet. I can still carry a couple ounces lol.

You must know my record with the silver nicks. You know that isn't likely lol.

I KNOW... I UNDERSTAND.... Been there, done that buddy. They (9-volts) get HOTTTTT quick.

Beautiful box, now you have to use gold batteries!
I have mine in a plastic case.
As long As they stay dry and no metal touches the contacts, your good.
My problem is forgetting to remove "all" batteries from seldom used devices.

You talked about fire wood and battery .. and i thought you meant you was going to keep LITHIUM batteries in it ...You know the battery that will just catch on fire sitting there ... It is a nice box ..But still i think it is to big and heavy to just keep battery's in .. But you like it so that is good

Manufactured by BIAF, you can find the various models on Amazon. Great quality.

Box is cool. But the moral of the story is recycle. The trash mountain at my local landfill is almost the highest point in the county. Good place to send tourists wanting photos of bald eagles. Keeps them away from nesting areas.

We've been testing 9 volts with the good old tongue test...and I'm not dead yet! :D
Don't think I'd try a 12 volt tho.:eek::sly:

The fire alarm/detector companies will use the scare tactic, of putting a 9-volt to a piece of steel wool.
POOF, instant fire..... :o
Which for ppl that may not know or be aware, ya may not wanna throw the 2 together into the inside trash,
and walk out the door for hours...... :BangHead:

Funny and informative thread, thanks all for sharing. :notworthy:
