I got permission to detect the site of Bowler #2. This town had three different sites. Bowler site #2 had a post office that was active from 1894 till ? -1936. My reference says 1936 but not sure this does not include site #3. The Burlington and Missouri River Railroad had a station at Bowler, but was discontinued in 1911. My detector acted oddly with all the metal and tin cans in the area. I think this was caused by the old tin cans. If you will notice the one tin can bottom, it is sealed with lead. The larger round coin-shaped piece still has some lead in the center, the small round piece has a small hole in it. If I am correct this was the way they sealed the cans for freshness. I also was able to find some older rifle casings, a .40-.82; a .38-.55; a.45 colt; and a .30 caliber. I also found what's left of an old lock, an old rail spike and few odds and ends. Thanks for letting me share these finds with you. folder 2 001.webp folder 2 003.webp folder 2 004.webp folder 2 005.webp folder 2 008.webp folder 2 006.webp folder 2 009.webp

Just detecting a ghost town would make my day! Congrats on some old time relics!

Those are some true "cowboy" cartridges! :)

cool hunt and interesting finds can you go back and find more stuff? HH

 Nice old stuff.

Sounds like an interesting site with lots of potential! Site pictures are always welcome. You might have to clear out the trash before you find the goodies. HH, Mike

Yes, but I always make sure before going back. Seems like a good idea to let the land owner know before going back. Also I want to go back and pick up as much as I can of all the trash metal. I'm thinking that one of those magnates on wheels might help. There are a lot of those round tin pieces in the photo's. Then I can do some serious detecting. I will try and get a photo of the site, but for now imagine an area that you can look in any direction for a mile or more that is mostly flat with low sagebrush. The actual site is flat with room sized craters where the half dozen buildings stood.

old digger FWIW I believe UMC stands for Union Metallic Cartridge co.
Still on ammo packaging these days.

Thanks for the info.

Just curious; Isn't the calibers ( .40-.82, and .38-.55 ) odd sizes? I haven't heard of these?

That's a Good day out for anyone.

Fossis...........
