Headed off to France this late morning to detect a farm field and to eat some French fries. There is a big notable difference when you cross that line known as the border, I crossed over at Saarbruecken Germany on Autobahn 6 that leads into Metz France. About 10 miles into France I hit a toll road, about $6.00 for the privilege of driving on their highway. Thought about driving into Metz which is a larger city but I was looking for a farm field and a plate of French Fries or Pommes Frites as they are called. I got of the highway and headed towards a town named Boulay, plenty of farm fields around and I wanted to drive through a few villages just for the culture of it all. The small villages are pretty much black and white, not much color to the houses. I drove into a small village, saw another small village in the distance and another up on a hill and then spotted my field to hunt. Here is the French border, not much and you just drive through.

This must be the Welcome to France sign, unless you are French, I do not think anyone is welcome here, especially Americans, LOL!

Driving down the highway, a sign indicating the kilometers to Metz, Nancy and Paris.

Here’s the field I detected between three villages, very sticky mud on these fields.

I did not find much but was very happy to find a French military button with a “26” on it, late 1800s to early 1900s. I think I have another one like it found in Bavaria.

I spotted two open restaurants on the way to the field and thought I would stop on the way home. One was closed when I drove back through and the other was serving drinks/beers/wine but the kitchen was closed, around 03:00PM. I stopped at a gas station/rest area on the highway and got this plate of French Fries, was actually an Ala Carte that I paid for, $8.00, everything but the main meat course. The ketchup tasted more like a tomato soup and all was very good. I will admit, the truck stops/highway restaurants in Europe serve very good meals.

Took this picture of a Shepard and his flock last weekend in Bavaria. I have seen him around since I arrived in Germany almost 22 years ago. Next time I see him I am going to stop and say hello and ask him his secret as I have seen him and his flock disappear several times, LOL. His flock is on a field where a medieval farm once stood near my home. The flock is scattered where four barns once stood, the main house was to the far right of the flock and that is where I found my gold coin and several other nice relics.

A wheat sickle and a few 50 Caliber rounds I found a few weeks ago.

A partial buckle from the 1600s and a small Caliber musket ball I found New Years Day or New Years Eve. Chopped them out of the frozen ground and you can see where I hacked the musket ball.

Obverse of a British 1936 .500 silver One Shilling coin found a few weeks ago.

Isn't French food great? (as they would say in America - WHERE'S THE BEEF? :P)

A small piece of something decent .... with French Fries PILED ON!

Personally, I HATE French "Cuisine"! (although some of the rest area restaurants are the best in France! - true story!)

... anyway, the finds are nice!

Hey! Ive got a France sign pic too! hehe, a friend and I used to roadtrip all over in her little car, we would stop at all the signs and take photos! Ive got quite a collection! :)
I like the pic of the flock of sheep, reminds me of that mellow European life i led for a little bit! I wouldn't mind trading the hustle and bustle of San Diego for a field and a flock of sheep!

Interesting finds. Nice work.

Shouldn't the France sign be written on a white background? ;)

Ah, fries, I like the ones from my local independent fast food place - made from Idaho potatoes, dipped into Del Monte Ketchup and sprinkled with Morton Salt. No need for a passport. :D
LMAO

That Shilling is in beautiful condition Mike, well found

Pom Frites

Is that what the French call them too.

I spent three years in Germany in the Army, loved it.

Wish we had real beer here in the states. :-\

Wonderful story and pictures!

Well done again. :)

Hey, Bavaria Mike,

I'll bet I'm not the only one interested in your story. What brought you to Europe?

Another great presentation, Mike. :)

I love it when you show your hunting grounds. I would love to hunt some of those fields.

Nice one Mike - enjoyed reading the post and viewing the photos. Given the international background of the members here I think we should post up the occasional photo of the journey (fries included).

Nice pics :)

Are you Canadian???

Thanks all! To answer a few questions, I am born American and raised in Ohio. My family is of German descent, all but my great Grandmother who is English and makes me wonder how the great Grandparents met, LOL. Came to Germany with the Army by choice as I wanted to see where my family came from, visit the town that bares my family name and try some of that great German beer. The ring above the button looks like a poultry leg tag with a date, I find many of them. I work for a company out of Orlando Florida that supports the military, contract is about to change however, I work in the German system and now have the privilege of paying German taxes thanks to the supportive American Government that dumped me into the German system. Long story, working with the Government is not a pretty picture! I do hope a Republican wins the election as I make my living anticipating war. How does a freak like Barack Obama even get to be a candidate? HH, Mike

I do not eat Freedom Fries with Mayo, tried it, didn't like it, LOL! HH, Mike

I wouldn't touch France with a ten foot "pommes frite" if you paid me....I went to St. Avold's France when I was stationed in Germany, couple bus load's of G.I.'s went over to the American Cemetery to lay flag's at the grave's of the fallen in WWII...I'll just have to say the people there didn't welcome us with open arm's....Don't think it's changed much in 25 yr.'s.Anyway Mike...Look's like you had a good time and some Great find's....Any chance of coming back to the U.S. for a good old fashioned clad hunt. ;D Take Care!!
