Didn't have to go far, just to my carport!

Ok, I know most folks in my area would not think twice about offing this little guy. I fish so I understand they are bad for fish populations, but he was so cute! He seemed dehydrated so I put him in a bowl of water (fresh clean no additives straight from the well) with a rock for him to climb on & some lettuce. left the house for about 6 hrs when I got back, he was ready to boogey so I put him by a little marsh area close to us. I do draw the line at venomous snakes though.

Love it! I stopped my truck and carried one across the road the other day. Good job :-)

Ahab I do the same thing!

the little snappers can still nip you pretty good

Must be those mamabear instincts :-) There was a monstrous snapping turtle trying to cross a busy road and I decided I would carry him. I bet he/she weighed 60 lbs and that thing absolutely clawed the crap out of my arms. Thos little stubbly legs are more flexible then you'd think. Keep doin your good work mamabear

dirtlooter, I was very careful to not get by his head. It's amazing how far their necks stretch out. First time my husband caught one, he brought it into our little dinghy. I tried to warn him about their super powers, but of course he did not believe me. Didn't take long though after it went after him. I'd never seen hubby move so fast, & the snapper went flying back in the water.

Good job Mamabear. I have a bad habit of helping turtles (and snakes). He helps to keep the balance in the pond... life is all about balance.

Looks like he just hatched

Nice save mammabear!

You have to respect something that will live as long as they do.

You gotta love the little guy, just don't be feeding him by hand!

when I was little my Pop caught soft shell snappers & made soup. It was good, but the mud turtles in the ponds around here taste just just like mud. It was my in-laws first visit to our place & that's what we made them. Hmm, I always wondered why they didn't come back.

A fellow turtle saver eh??

I just got one out of the road last Saturday. It was just about the same size too and halfway across a fairly busy road.

Fortunately, I was about 50 yards from a nice pond so I grabbed my MD'ing shovel from the car, scooped him up and walked him to the edge of the pond. He was snapping at the handle the entire time I was carrying him. I put him down and off into the water he went. Those little ones move really quick.

I actually stopped traffic to save that critter. One car JUST missed running him over before I ran out into the road. I've seen a few turtles get smashed and it's definitely not a pretty sight for anyone to see. If I can prevent it I always do.

I found one down the farm last week about the size of a half dollar. Must have been a good hatch this year!

We had one show up a few weeks ago on the front walk right next to our strawberry patch ... That's what the little feller was after.

Folks around here go out of their way to run over them. It's hard to teach balance to people that have been raised to believe an animal is a scourge. I have found that preachin gets them mad, so I just try to joke about it & do my little share of showing there are other ways.
Nice to know there are so many caring folks on this site.

Wow, nice. I for one, would stop the assist animals, wild life included. Imagine my surprise when I stopped for some obstruction and discovered an African Spurred Tortoise. It happened to me a three years ago. Interesting creatures. I found him a certified home. Soo Nice. Warm and Fuzzy feeling
