...well, that's what my daughter told me when I showed her the 1943 mercury dime. I went for a hunt at a town park that had an old house back in the 1800's. I couldn't find the site but after another look at the map when I got home I see the house was much farther off the road. Will head back another day. Found a bunch of coins and the merc then picked the kids up from school. My older one told me that in 1941 the US started making dimes from mercury to conserve metal for the war effort! I pretended to be very interested and did not ruin her moment. She had the basic idea right about metal for the war. I'll update her this weekend on some facts but first I have to read up on it.

Nice shooting' there, Gene! I need to do that again sometime.

Great Mercury Dime find!
When I was a kid my dad drove a Mercury so I thought it had something to do with that. I think your daughter's guess is closer to the truth since money can just slip out of your hand like 'quick silver'!

Pulling a Merc always makes for a good day.

She was close only missed it by a nickel.

Produced by the United States from mid-1942 to 1945, "War Nickels" were made from 56% copper, 35% Silver, and 9% manganese. By saving the nickel metal, the government was able to use that metal for the production of military supplies during World War II.

great find on the dime!!

Deep1. You sure you didn't miss it by a nickel? The conversation is about a mercury dime.

Thank you for the info. I will relay that to my daughter.
