Message: What a awesome event, I saw some amazing relic's come out of the ground in those 3 days. A friend was digging a test hole a few feet behind me and found a US plate in it! He had actually hit it with his shovel. The most outstanding find was a soldiers silver corps badge showing the Regiment he was in and the three battles he had faught in. His name was on the back side. I had a tough time on day one because of the highly mineralized red dirt. I finally got it figured out and did ok. On the last day I dug the top part of a three piece Schaler bullet. I enjoyed seeing some old friends and meeting some new ones as well. Enjoy the pic's. Tim

Hey Gypsy, hunting in that red stuff is tough, it's like red powdered iron! My MXT was the right machine for that type of soil. The problem for me was I had never hunted in that type of soil before. The first day I had around 4 bullets and one button to show for myself by 5pm. I ran into my hunting buddy Sgt. Lowe who has hunted this stuff several times.
He showed me by example, motioning me over to a spot he had a target. He said if you can get a signal that is repeatable, but has no VDI at all but you can pinpoint than dig it. The only thing you hear is a very faint wa wa tone. I watched him dig that signal and it was a round ball. I went a few minutes and got a faint wa wa tone that had no VDI and was repeatable and I could pinpoint. I dug it and it was a 3 ringer!
The next morning we got started at 6:30am and my first 4 targets I picked out were signals just like that. I dug 3 bullets and a Eagle button. Some of the bullets were maybe 2 or 3 inche's deep but with this high mineralization the tones were weak. The next time I hunt in that stuff I will have a gameplan for sure.
I passed on that info to several other hunters who had struggled as well. They all approached me later in the hunt and thanked me for the info because they were finding stuff after that. I really think that if I had that knowledge on the opening day I would have found twice as many relics as what I ended up with. There were around 350 relic hunters at that DIV. Look at the print of the battle and you can see the Farley house in the top right. I took a picture of the Farley house as it is today.
