I recently built a towfish to search for civil war wrecks on the Potomac River. Built with steel tube and PVC. See attached photos. It's got a ball hitch on the nose. Front half is steel tube. Back half is PVC. Four pounds of weight above the transducer. I've only got about fifteen feet of cable currently but it works pretty well. Haven't tested in choppy seas yet but will probably need more cable to reduce motion.
It's also got a depth sensor (voltage indicates depth via a simple analog voltage meter. In testing today I was doing about six mph and it was flying about four feet deep.
It's hooked to a Lowrance HDS7.
I'm mainly looking for a wreck called Black Diamond. No luck yet. Would welcome any info on it that isn't already available on the net. Looking for historical reasons only. No treasure of any kind on this wreck but its historical value is huge.
