I don’t go out during the Texas summers. After it cools down (below 90º) I go about once a mouth, maybe less. My main problem is the hard, dry ground. It hasn’t rained much since I took up metal detecting. :crybaby2: :binkybaby:

Off? what is "off" you speak of? I don't stop as long as the ground is open.

When it's in your blood It will NEVER be boring....

Usually i get a chance to go out every day for about 2 hours. And maybe on weekends 4 hours a day.Iam going through a phase where i have to find new locations.I have boring days. But in the end i enjoy it.I realy love this hobby.

I'm kinda new to the hobby...but totally addicted. I've found nine silver rings and two gold in the last three weeks...I hunt the local beaches in socal four or five times a week and when your finding stuff it's hard not keep going.

I am " ON " it as long as I can two or three times a week. I detect till the ground is frozen and can't wait till it thaws out again in the spring. I hate the long months of winter here in Montana.

I try to get out every day...for 2 hrs ad longer if I can.

Not all about finding something everytime......it,s great exercise !!!

Sure it is frustrating to not find something but can count on 1 hand how many times I have actually found NOTHING of interest.

But it is my 1st year at it...so maybe the interest will wane....not exactly easy to find spots to go if your out almost everyday. Sometimes I can,t find new grounds because the owners aren,t home or I,m just too passive to bother stopping to ask and just end up at a old spot in the hopes of finding something I,ve missed before.

Some of them nice looking spots end up being totally barren. Also have hunted a spot that you would never have expected to have anything in it.....but ended up with 15+ coins dated 1812-1920 coins with some other nice trinkets like buttons /bell etc....you just never know what things were like 200 years ago....

Keeps the mystery going...can,t see it passing but maybe it will.

Just 4 days a week March to Christmas and in between some... at nite or day !!

It waxes and wanes for me in town here, but the flame always burns inside. It is instinctive for me to look at old house yards and my head instantly swivels if I see a sidewalk, house yard, park etc. being ripped up. It is a little more challenging for me currently as I am in a very small city that has been pounded hard by guys that knew what they were doing. This includes the little one room schools in the surrounding area, which can be quite good if untouched. But this has made me a little more inventive so it could be a plus. A couple of years ago it stopped bothering me that good detectorists hit all the decent spots and vacuumed the grass strips. Not because I am anything special as a detectorist, but that what was said is true. No one gets everything and that there are still finds here and there regardless of the pounding a site took. It just takes more work\hobby knowledge for me to get those last bits. But they are still out there.

I detected when I was kid with my dad. I barely remember trailing behind him. This would have been in the late 70s. Over the years, I spent many hours walking the roads and woods searching for bottles and anything else that was interesting. About ten years ago when I was stationed in Texas I spent the better part of the whole time I was there searching for arrowheads and artifacts, so treasure hunting was something I had always done in some form.

About 1999 I bought my first detector, a Treasure Ace 300. I got frustrated with the detector because it never found anything very deep and it was slow and gave false signals alot. In 2009 I decided to join a club, but I never took it very serious. I got a friend of mine into metal detecting and this has made me a little competitive to keep up with him.

I still consider myself new to the hobby in a way. This year I decided to "take control" of my hobby and I started to become more bold and talk about it and not let opportunities pass me to hunt areas like I had before and perfect my research skills. The work has paid off, because I have started to find a lot of really neat things and I rarely come home without a couple of wheat cents at least. I probably hunt 2-4 days a week, at least 3 hours at a time. It was still hard for me to make time due to my family and being a single parent, but I think that everyone excepts my quirks especially after I bring home interesting items for them to admire.

I've heard people say that there isn't that many things to find anymore. I only believe this to a point, because we only skim the the very top layer when we detect and there are so many factors that affect our abilities to find things whether it is looking at the surface or digging. I do agree that many more people are into metal detecting because of the notoriety that has taken place in the last few years and the newer equipment that has come out. I am happy that I was able to witness and use the equipment that was out in the 70s' and I am just now starting to accept change. In regards to going back over the old places that people have already detected, It makes me want to purchase much better equipment and perfect my listening and swinging/scanning technique. I love to "eck out" another coin, or relic behind someone.

I try to get out when the body lets me, even if I have to detect while in pain. When I was younger I would hit two or three beaches a day with naps between beaches. Sometimes I got to pooped to go out and just had to take a break for couple days.

I am just curious what others metal detecting habits are? I found that over the summer I was going every saturday and sunday and then stopped for a while. I haven't gone out in a month and a half and now going to head out tomorrow. Does anyone else go through these phases? Almost like its fun then gets a bit boring then fun again type deal.

You Bet! It's called Adult ADD ... I bounce in and out of Fishing, Metal Detecting, and Home Improvement Project, sometimes I do one thing for months at a time and switch on a dime :) or is that swing over a dime

I try to go out at least once a week, more if I can! But I can't quit my day jobs. I would go out all the time if I could!!!! Maybe I will win the lottery....

This is a really good forum topic to discuss. I am finding out that folks have a little ADD like me concerning hobbies and projects. That is why I haven't detected exclusively over the years. My desire is to be good at it and help others and of course find interesting items.

I am so thankful that I have been able to take a semi-retirement, which means that I can almost make it on the amount that I retired on but still have to work a little in order to augment my retirement or just to stay busy. I have only been semi-retired a couple of weeks and I have been detecting more than ever, but it also has been raining more than ever the last couple of weeks. The luck.

I suppose if you were a coin hunter and got up round the crack of dawn ...it would be okay to hunt around here but....But if you are a civil war relic hunters , you hunt dense thick woods. Skeeters , spyders , TICKS , dense vegetation. One thing in past years I did was if I knew where a field was...i would save some of it for summer hunting because around here ...you dont go in the deep woods in the Summertime. Oh I left one thing out ...SAW BRIERS or however you spell it.

It is a great hobby and one I wish I had more time for. Problem is I hunt artifacts also and bow hunt the winters. Then there is riding season on the bike, fishing my work but metal detecting is always top of my list and especially researching an area and getting permission. I researched one spot and paddled my kayak maybe 5 miles to it yesterday dug 20 horse and mule shoes. Nothing but iron but had a blast.
Yeah off and on....

Well, being mostly a cache hunter, most of my time is consumed in research. I slip out from time to time to keep the senses sharp. Like this morning, I slipped out in the field where the old house use to set many years ago. I dug an old lock with FLAC , an arrow and 5 on it and 2 weats my dog, Blue, dug a 3rd while I was checking the plug. They were about 4" down so they were lost in the 40's. Now back to the research. Frank.
