DON"T HUNT THERE! But I did :)

One of the area's best coin/ring shooters told me to not even bother with this site. He had hunted out everything worth digging and others had also beaten it to death.

Now, normally I'd think the guy was just trying to keep the site for himself but I know this guy and he hasn't got a selfish bone in his body. And too, he's one of the most successful THers I've ever met. Once he dug a real diamond ring that would retail upwards of $5,000.

Okay, so I came to this site to get skunked. I didn't even bother to recharge my Tejon's batteries. I figured I just drain them down more for the next charge.

About my 7th or 8th target turned out to be an old football charm at about 6 inches deep. Then I dug lots of junk like kerosene lamp parts, zinc lids, tin scraps, etc.

To make a long story a little shorter I finally ended up by the biggest tree in this part of Michigan. They say it's at least 150 years old. Trees grow very slowly here so I'd guess more like 200. The local township hall has a picture of this tree taken in 1900 and it was as big around as a man back then!

Well I thought It would be cool to dig an old coin by this town's "historic tree." I did my Tejon thing using my own "secret method" and dug lots of unknown junk. Suddenly I get a very nice sound right in between some trash signals. I could only move the coil about 2 inches back and forth to hold the signal. I dug down only about 3 inches and there was one of the finnest Indian cents I have ever dug! It has a full bold liberty and once I clean it a little it will be my IH prize! Trust me, it looks 10 times better to the eye! It must of been lost almost new.

The rest of the digs here are self explanatory. Some of them are unknown to me so I'll have to post them again and see if anyone knows what they are.

HH,

Badger

Nice finds MB and congrats! I would kindly ask that you remove the kerosene parts from the junk statement as I hunted a park close to the old town with huge Oak trees and a intact kerosene wick neck was my best find besides a live bullet, LOL. HH, Mike

WTG Badger!!!! That IH probably seemed iffy to most machines and lead the MD's to leave her be!!!! Nice job with your new Tesoro- now go get that 5.75 coil and see what else is there ;D
Greg

Ya, I know what you mean Greg. Last year I used the Nautilus IIB and when I put on the 6 inch coil it was like a whole new ballgame. In fact, that's the only coil to use on the Nautilus in my opinion. The Naughty 10 inch coil is way too big for hunting trashy sites.

Anyway, today with the Tesoro Tejon life is much better! So, that 5.75 would give me a lot more loot?

Badger,
FANTASTIC IH!!! Beautiful condition. Congrats to you on your finds. Great pix.
Those IH's must be attracted to big trees? I found my 1874 right up next to a huge oak tree.

Re: DON"T HUNT THERE! But I did :)

Times are hard and the fields and sites are over grown, I'm scrounging for a site to detect! Have turned to park piracy in the mean time (with all do respect to park hunters, they are tough to hunt). I was thrilled to see a few hay fields cut today and I will have some good detecting the rest of the week. Hope to post the scrounged site finds soon as I managed a few interesting finds. HH, Mike

Great digs! How are you planning on cleaning the IH ? I have a few nice ones that I would enjoy having looking better...... what do I need to do ??

Nice finds

Badger: Sweet Indian Head! Really like the little football pendant. Any idea how old it is? And what species is the big tree? A pine? I like the horseshoes, too. Keep digging!

That is one good looking Indian head Badger--Congrats on the nice finds.

Nice finds Badger,
Love the old Indian Heads and the mystery cylindrical tube is a lipstick case.

We all know no place is ever really hunted out. Even the old Pro's always leave something behind for us slow pokes! Great finds, keep it up....

Thanks.

The only cleaning methods I have ever tried that work for me are long time water soaks or the rock tumbler.

Essentially the rock tumbler accomplishes the same thing as water soaks only much faster. Contrary to what some people think, the tumbler is actually one of the mildest cleaning methods out there if done correctly.

Use the tumbler with aquarium gravel and water. Fill it about 1/3 full and only do one Indian at a time. Check frequently I'd say about every hour. The length of time is determined by the patina you want to preserve on the coin. I turn mine just long enough to reveal the most detail possible.

If after cleaning the coin looks grainy heat it with a hot air blower (hair dryer) and then coat it with Renaissance Wax and buff. Ren Wax is sold on ebay and makes a pited coin look much better.

Hope this helps.

Guess you proved again that "hunted out" is a phrase that should be discarded. :)
Great finds!
Congrats.

Mr T. TeJon did you right! And, you showed that guy how no spot is ever worked completely out. Congrats for your show of perserverance and determination! This MD'ing stuff is hard work! :)
