found this this weekend at the ..... well, I might get shot if I say where. it has the texture of leather, the center of it looks like glass and feels like wax but its not either, I thought it was a funny looking rock when I found it so I put it in m pouch and brought it home to check out. thinking a tooth...maybe

it doesn't sound like you're describing it to be metal, but the same formation happens when molten metal forms a blob on a flat surface and begins to cool (an air pocket will form on the bottom side)

Maybe it's a small or worn down fossil tympanic bone or a piece of a fossil bulla (Florida River Fossils Megalodon Dinner Giant Mammal Tympanic Bulla EAR Bone | eBay)...
You have lots of fossils over there in NC.
