The monsoon finally moved out of western Pennsylvania around noon yesterday and the skies brightened up. I was visiting my parents over the weekend, but I had my metal detector with me so I decided to try and get a few hours in before heading back to Pittsburgh. Farm fields were out of the question due mud and standing water, so I decided to try the Deus out at an old site I have hunted many times over the last 18 years. This place is grassy and drains well so mud and water wouldn't be a problem.

This is a pretty old site for my area, and I have recovered 27 coppers and 3 Spanish silvers here, including an 8 reale and a cut pistareen, not to mention the buttons and other relics. I wasn't expecting to find much because I have hit this place hard with every new machine I get. This was the Deus' first crack at this place and it lived up to it's reputation.

Copper #28 finally made it's appearance, a Draped Bust large cent. I am going to work on it some more tonight to see if I can bring the date out.

Here are a couple dirt shots - Copper #28 peaking out of the dirt and a freshly dug, large and shiny tombac.

What a beautiful spot to have for all those years to swing and still coming up with the goods. You are one lucky man.

It's alway nice to get something else out of a hard hit site. The Deus has proven this a few times with me also, I'd be happy to get what you just got from your site. Congrats

Great recoveries Steve. I can make out part of the date from your cleaned up photo. I would be tempted to work that area some more, but carefully. It would be cool if it was a 1700's coin. Congrats!

Awesome spot to search, congratulations! GL & HH

nice, sounds like that site has been kind to you

wow, what a site and you managed even more out of it. I love my Deus too. congrats

You guys in New England always wear it out!!! Congrats

COPPERS WERE WORTH SO MUCH BACK THEN. EVERY TIME I SEE ONE I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO CAUSE THEM TO LOSE ONE. Sorry for the caps

That's awesome! Have you gone over that same spot with your other machines? I am just wondering how the largie sounded. Was it a squeak or a strong signal that your other detectors would have gotten?

This site is very small, maybe 20 x 30 yards if that. I have been over every inch of it multiple times, but I hadn't hunted it in several years. I have found that when you leave a site alone for a few year, then come back there are good signals that you couldn't hear before for whatever reason. The Large Cent was sitting at about a 45 degree angle, not vertical, but it might have been standing on edge for years, and finally started to flatten out. It was a decent signal, but not quite as good as a large cent usually sounds on the Deus, and the numbers were a bit lower. Plus ground conditions were great and maybe I had the Deus settings just right. It was only about 8 inches deep.

Those are some really sweet finds!

Excellent hunt

You dug some nice coins there.
