Has the price spike in silver changed the definition of a "dream box"? It used to be accepted that it took at least 100 silver coins in a halves box to qualify. I think everything has changed at this spot level and that the quantity found in boxes is going to shrink in the coming months if this keeps up. Too many news features and radio commercials touting the value of silver will keep it from being tossed into the coin sorters. But with a spot price that keeps going up doesn't it just even out. Smaller finds but the same average value in finds. Today I did two boxes and pulled 15 40% that just a few months ago would have been "ok", today that is $100+ in silver value. Hit a 100 coin dream box now and you have really hit the lottery! Maybe we are down to 75 for a dream box?

double digit silvers would be my dream box...so far my best has been 4 silvers in one box.

I'd say 60 since that was the largest amount I ever got in a box.. and that was 10 years ago.. no dream boxes like that since.

For me a dream box would be a record box. Anything that breaks the previous record would be a dream. Right now that would need to be at least 22 for halves.

Never got a "dream box", but I'd consider anything that could pay for 20% of the half dollar box is a great find!

I remember someone once reported a 500+ box mostly 40%. In 2009 I got 126 out of a box with 111 being 90%. Was pretty stoked with it then...now that box is worth almost $2000! Would love to see another one of those but I think those days are long gone....

I think those days are long gone too :(

I dont necessarily know about that, my dad told me that he used to CRH back in the late 60s and early 70s and is shocked at how much better at the game I am doing than he ever did. We live in the same area, so that's not a variable in the equation. I think that as the economy goes downhill you are more inclined to see people dumping coins they have been saving in their jars and such. Dumped coins from a non CRHer = silver, the more coins dumped by a non CRHer = the more silver coins out there.

That's just my opinion based on what someone who tried their hand at this 40 years ago when silver was just taken out of circulation said.

I've always thought the "dream box" qualification of a straight 100 keepers was flawed, and it is. A box with 99 Bens and Walkers wouldn't be a dream box, but a box with 100 40%ers would be. Somehow that has never seemed quite right. I'd HAPPILY take either, but give me my choice and its a no-brainer. I'll take the 99 (or even 45) 90%ers over a 100 40% box any day, as would anyone else. Plus, the fluctuating price of silver really should influence the qualification as well. I remember a few posts from some members that were doing this years ago when silver was cheap and dream boxes were more common than they are today. According to their posts, 40%ers were selling for $0.55. A 100 40% dream box would only have a "profit" of $5. At today's prices, a box with a lone 40%er is worth more than that dream box from years ago. That doesn't seem right either.

Don't water down the dream box standard of 100 silver keepers or more.

Value should have nothing to do with it. Silver could tank tomorrow.

In 1964 the value of 100 silver halves was $50.

Just my 2 cents.

The way my crappy boxes have been the past few months, one that has more than 3 keepers is a dream box to me.

But realistically speaking, if I found a box that had 50 90%ers, nobody could tell me that was not a dream box.

Well, here is my two cents:

Although someone has issued the 100 number as the "dream box," I agree that is the top number. However, we should keep in mind the times; that is, 1 or 2 years ago--at least when I started--silver was at $26.00 per troy oz. Times, as we all know, has drastically changed.

To me, and this is only one opinion, I would say 50 keepers is a dream box. Perhaps with the changing tide, 100 would be a "the ultimate box." :icon_sunny:

And, for this ol'gal personally, I have never had more than 75 at one haul, and that was 4 boxes en toto.

Well said Tim. I agree.

I have no problems with a dream box being equal to 100 keepers. It should be a near impossible find. Otherwise it isn't much of a feat to find one. However, when it comes to halves, a 40%er is considered equal to a 90%er for dream box status. Thats absurd. I think it ought to be based on the amount of silver in the box - not just simply the number of silver coins. If a box with 100 40% is the minimum qualification, then a 90%er ought to be equal to 2.25 40%ers. The most logical thing to do is use a points system. A 40%er is worth 1 point. A 90%er is worth 2.25 points. 100 points = dream box. Pretty simple.

HAHA well you all crack me up but if i must put in my 2 cents. i would have to agree with the point system as the best way to classify a DREAM BOX. Just remember though that for 100 points would be equivalent to about 755.55 dollars or 16 oz. of silver.

I agree that the "Dream Box" standard should be equal to a given weight of silver, regardless of what combination of 90% and 40% coins you get. The point system mentioned above is quite good, because it gives you the lowest standard, which is 100 40% halves. BTW, that number of halves equals 14.7893 ounces of silver.

My best box ever gave me about 10.8 ounces, which is worth quite a bit more now than then (at $28 or so an ounce), and I am very glad that I didn't sell any.

I agree. Back in the day it was the number of coins found not the value. If you had a box that had 10% of the coins being silver it was automatically a dream box. I do like the idea of a dream box having a min. of 14 oz of silver if someone wants to start considering that a dream box too.

I have always thought that dream box meant 10% or more. 100 40% halves will be a greater value than 100 90% dimes. The 10% rule would apply to all coins across the board from Wheaties in cents, to Peace and Morgans in a bag or box of large dollars. I looked for this in the terms listed for CRH and couldn't find it.
