Dump banks disappearing

I heard at two banks this week that they were phasing out their coin counting machines. One was broken down and they said it would not be replaced, and the other said that the next time it breaks it would be removed. They said that they were getting many people with halves and it was tearing up the machines. These were banks I dumped at long ago when I was still CRHing and the machines always worked great. I had some dumps from this weeks 2 boxes and the machine at the bank that still worked took them OK.

Last week I was at another bank just doing regular banking and heard a teller tell another customer that their machine was gone for good and any coin now had to be rolled.

I still have a couple of good dump banks if I need to use them, but I wonder for how long?

Anyone else seeing this?

PS I was at a coin store recently and overhead a customer who was buying silver rounds. He was bragging to the store clerk about how he is finding "free silver" searching halves. He said he was searching through tons of boxes each week (I wonder how much that is?). I didn't say anything but should have pretended to not know about CRHing and then ask him some questions. I know the increase in CRHers in my area has gone through the roof in the past few months.

Yes, there are more CRHers out now. They kind of give us a bad name. They're inconsiderate and greedy. They order and dump at the same bank and they overdo it because they order too many boxes and overburden the bank. Tellers get tired of them and get tired of CRHers. There's only one way to combat these people. Get in good with the tellers and tell them that you will help with getting rid of these greedy breed of CRHers. Of course, many tellers will be happy to do so. Convince them to take your dumps and give them to these newbies.

Tellers get tired of them and get tired of CRHers. There's only one way to combat these people. Get in good with the tellers and tell them that you will help with getting rid of these greedy breed of CRHers. Of course, many tellers will be happy to do so. Convince them to take your dumps and give them to these newbies. Learn to re-crimp wrap and re-box the coins to look like new. After, a good amount of skunks, they go away and bother some other bank or quit.

I have pretty much given up CRHing due to lack of finds. But even if I kept up with it I would never re roll my dumps. I have been spoiled I guess since day one I have had coin counters to use.

I still get bags off machines when I can, but the boxes are not worth the time anymore. I would say 1 out of 10 boxes has "decent" finds, meaning anywhere from 5 to 20 keepers in it (40%ers). But it is not worth the time and effort dumping all those for less than 100 bucks of silver. When I first started CRHing in 2008, a skunk box was rare (at least for the first few months). Too bad I was only doing one box a week back then.

As far as the hobby aspect, I love FINDING silver, but hate the skunk boxes with a passion.

It does require a substantial amount of work to re-wrap them but it is worth is because you are getting rid of competition. The competition is what drains your area dry. Some of these people get over their heads with it, ordering large amounts of boxes and dumping at the same bank. C'mon, tellers are human too and they don't want to do all that extra work just so you can do your hobby. Unlike many other members here, I only go to my order bank once a week and get around three boxes. I just hate the thought of some guy who orders 30 boxes a week to drain the area dry. Tellers don't like them either so I will help them out to get rid of them.

I noticed that my area has already become depleted somewhat. I keep track of the numbers and I had much better boxes two years ago than now. Skunk boxes appear about half the time. I am envious of the people in the northeast.

I am currently considering doing more dime boxes. They are more consistant yet worth less. I do about a dime box per week.

People like me can't imagine what it is like to not have free coin counters in their area, I abuse those And they are always right on, sometimes it counts extra coins too!

I've always had to re-roll my halves. I only get 1k per week, but they've ALL been skunks for a while. I don't know why I even bother.

Pick up bag of skunks, re-roll, deposit. Rinse. Repeat.

I'm losing lots of free time, gas, and wear and tear on the truck.

Oh well, maybe someday............

(That's why I do it. There's ALWAYS someday to look forward to)

I have two banks that will only take rerolls coins. My other banks still have counters. So I switch off on the banks so they do get to upset about all the halfs that I have been going thur. I hate the counters on the dimes because they will usually not count right and I am short a couple of bucks each time. So I will reroll then so I don't lose money......Matt

've searched dimes for 3 years straight, never said I'd reroll, even tho my bank credits the shorts at the machine, I've been re-rolling since the new year. It really doesn't take much more time...but is it worth it? I've searched $13k in dimes this year. Method only works with customer rolls, imo ffd

They also quit letting me pick up over 50 bucks worth of dimes at a time. Now this bank is in trouble and may go under. I wonder if they are cutting off coin services in order to try & save a little $$$. HH Doug

I think initially they offered coin counters as a courtesy to customers who were previously using fee coin counters at the grocery store, etc.

Over time with the huge gain in CRHers over the past few years banks are realizing that for the most part their machines are being utilized by a few high volume CRHers and that they (the banks) don't really make much profit off of said CRHers (by high volume I mean CRHers who bring in more than the average joe, like 500 plus on each trip). Plus, over time I would imagine the coin courier companies will have or already have started charging more for hauling bigger loads of coins to and from the banks.

I know a couple of tellers pretty well and I believe it when they say that on average it costs around 300 bucks or so every time a tech comes out to fix their machine (which seems to happen mostly from halves). I know my halves in the past caused a machine to break down on more than one occasion.

Bottom line: As they say, there is no free lunch (for us CRHers), at least not forever.
