Got a short notice visit from the Patriot, and I certainly couldn't turn down an opportunity to dig so we gave it a shot for a couple of days. Yesterday wasn't good, and today wasn't either until we found a small French site which gave us a little to dig.

Not real pretty, but I'm sure I won't be either after about 270 years in the ground.

Coins are...

2 French 6 Denier 1710, & 1710-1712

1740 George II Halfpenny.

Last two pics is a lead French bale seal and 45 Frenchy musketballs. The things just wouldn't stay out of the way!

Nice finds for sure, the french were always known to have great sites to hunt.:icon_thumright:

I've been on many, some being incredible. This particular one would rank very low on the scale, but it's still cool knowing every thing you dig is that old. There very well could be a cob or other early silver hiding in the field, but obviously only more hunting will answer that. I would imagine this Fall I'll end up back there for a couple of hours.

That's a lot of balls. I can imagine they would get annoying after a dozen or so.

At least the coppers came out in decent condition, actually GEO II with a date, and the one french are quite nice indeed a lot of field coppers that old are just discs.

Your French coin turned out better than my French deniers....my Geo II had the same date on it...I think there is more stuff higher in the field where I was pulling more targets before we left...
I could dig those pesky lead balls all day, as long as other old stuff was in the mix and thanks to you IP I'm closer to achieving that 50lbs of musket balls
yes IP worked his magic with the farmers yesterday...I could not believe he talked his way onto a field they were just planting...

Considering the balls can turn up anywhere at the bottom of the field I assume other items would be spread around as well, it just takes time to find them. The place looks sightly better now being well rested.

I'd take those finds, better than my last few times out! One trip included about 9KM of walking through the woods looking for one of those darned Acadian sites. I think I was on the wrong side of the creek! All I got out of it was sore knees and some exercise!

Great finds and pics- hope I get to be annoyed with musket balls some day.

So this means you haven't gone Pro yet?

Don't ya remember, this was the norm.! Or should I post some of the 100 French Marine buttons I've dug to remind you. :happysmiley:

It's good to see you dusted off the cobwebs and dust and got some fresh air, still getting a few old coppers keeps the interest going for a site.

Now where have I heard the say "Digging lead is your friend"

Yeah I'll always have detecting in the brain whether I'm out or not, but one day I'll crack the books and old maps and get me some good stuff. Lead certainly serves a purpose as it's a great sign you could be close to a site, I just prefer the site to consist more of the other non ferrous metals.

At least you didn't come home wearing this baby :laughing7:

Great digs! There has got to be a real cool story behind all those musket balls. It's not likely they were just misplaced.

We don't ever dig any coins like that down this way. Or lead in that quantity either. Great hunt!

They look really pretty to me. Congrats!

Musket ball bonanza!!!! Nice haul IP.

I've probably dug 300 musketballs in one of my better sites here. So lead really is all over the place, and it can be a good sign...

Or it can just be a pouch dropped.
