I do not use Ebays buy it now often to sell .. i tried today and they told me i have to list my item to start at 30% less than the buy it now price… That means that if i want to sell something for $200.00 i have to list the auction price at $140 or $60 less than i want and if some one bids $140.00 and no one else bids i would only get $140 for the item and lose $60 ??

You should be able to put a "reserve bid" on it, so if that threshold is not met, there's no sale.

Yep. But... If $200 is the least you'll take simply start it at $200 with a buy it now that's higher. Or start it lower but with a $200 reserve. There is no rule that you have to lose money. I only do auctions but I think if you have an Ebay store you can also have only buy it now sales without going through the auction format. I'm not real clear on how that works.

Yeah the 30% thing is stupid! For some items it works for me, but others it's like you're saying.... they make you risk selling it lower if you want to list a BIN you actually think someone would go for. Sure you can start it at $200, but that can push the BIN out of range, and then you're stuck with the opening bid sale at best.... when before you could have put it a BIN at $220 or $230, had a better chance of selling, and at least covered your fees with that extra. The buy it now was always some good leverage for a seller because if done right it puts a buyer in an awkward spot, either pay a little more or risk losing it... and sometimes they would make the purchase. But now the BIN puts it so high that everyone knows it will not sell and they just wait to try and snipe for the opening price.

1) On a straight BIN (buy it now) you can list for any price you want.

2) you are confusing an auction with the BIN feature.

two different things.

if you still want to do (2) then just start the auction where you would be happy with a sale of one bid and then add 30% or more for BIN.

I just listed 10 VCR blank tapes with starting bid of $9.99 and a BIN of $15
I would be happy with either sale. Already got 1 bid and it might go up.

But you see your 30% on 9.99 would only be 3.00 if you tried to put it up at buy it now at 12.75 they would not let you…. with mine being at 200.00 that meant i would have to start the auction price at 140.00

What? They let you go under the 30%? I'm very surprised by that because I figured it was written in stone. It seems lately ebay is sort of listening to common sense!

I could have put $13 but decided to go 50%

did you see my original post?
you could do a BIN only (#1 above) it is not an auction. it is just a FOR SALE at this price listing.

Now to make things more confusing you could ad a "MAKE OFFER" button. where someone could offer you what they are willing to pay.

There are :

Auctions ( Your Typical Auction)

Auctions With Buyitnow (Auction with option to buy it now) <------ 30% rule applies here

Fixed Price Item BuyitNow ( Sell for a fixed amount )

.. IP ..yes you can sell with BIN with out that 30% thing ,, but they make it so hard to navigate in ebay now i don't know were i found it at i don't even know how to find my favorite sellers now..

Click the fixed price button. Bin are mostly a waste of time on a auction. If you list it with both by the time it reaches you bin price the next guy will just click it, so the bids most of the time will never go higher then it. You can always lower the price as the time goes. I list for 7 days, by the 3rd I lower the price, 6th same, when it closes I change a few things and relist.
When you start selling a lot and buying alot that stuff piles up while you wait days to end a auction. Good rule of thumb, if it can be ordered or bought at a store bin, antiques or out of sake stuff auction unless only worth 10 bucks bin.

Example listed a outdoor speaker for auction starting at 20.00. No one bid at all in 7 days. Posted bin sold the same day for 45 plus shipping. So unless its rare or a antique I now list at bin.

My BINs disappear when someone bids so the price can exceed what the BIN was, and in the situation you describe which I never use, and rarely see, but think it's possible, as long as the item is priced right the seller should be happy if that next guy clicks it, because the price he clicks is the amount they were very happy to get when they listed. As for dropping the price after 3 days you lost me there because that's not even the point where most items start to get views. The last 48 hours is way more important than the first 5 days. There might be a case for the first 24 hours with people looking for deals through the new listings, but the last part of the listing is obviously the zone where people are ready to buy.

Mine does as well. As soon as there is one bid the buy it now disappears. I also agree that the end is all that matters. I constantly have auctions running that seem to show zero interest and with seconds to go they will get multiple bids.

I have no idea how you list it without a reserve to have the auction run and the BIN not be killed with a bid, but I am very sure I have seen it before. It was from Europe, but generally all the options are the same so figure there's a way to do it.

Definitely true, usually the bids that count go in over the last 10 seconds, but it's the increased views over the last two days that gets you most of those bidders at the end.

I do the same thing myself when I'm buying. I generally choose to look at auctions ending within 24 hours and save the ones that catch my eye to bid on at the end. I try not to get sucked into the "need to win" though and will often throw in a bid that's the most I'm willing to pay & then go do something else. I'll come back later and see if I won. If I didn't then someone wanted it more than I did. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised that I "stole it".
