Eagle "I" Button, CW Bullets & Dman's Off I.R. & Digging Tenn. CW Relics Again

With Dman released to relic hunt by his physician and a warm Tennessee day, he couldn't wait to get out with Josh and myself on Saturday at a CSA Cavalry camp. Within 5 minutes of arriving and only 50 feet from the truck, he had already dug a hunk of campfire lead and a dropped .69 cal. round ball. He was grinning from ear to ear. He held up pretty well from his shoulder surgery but a little over two hours was about all he could take and we left. Unfortunately, Josh could only hunt about an hour and a half before he had to go. The finds recovered by Dman and myself are in the first pic. Josh's cleaned finds are displayed in the second pic including an Eagle button and bullet from his solo hunt yesterday at a U.S. Cavalry site. I got lucky and found the Eagle "I' button in the third pic with Dman looking on (he loves to dig buttons). Josh had been gone about 10 minutes when I dug the Infantry officer's button and Dman called Josh on our way home and told him about it. He actually accused us of making up a story-imagine that-LOL.
Dman and Josh hunted the area of the camp on Saturday where I dug the CS Block "I" button on the last day of January and I worked the front camp area. Josh helped Dman by digging his holes. They both dug a .44 cal.Colt Dragoon pistol bullet and Josh and I had not dug one of that type at all in that particular spot while Dman recovered from his surgery. Even though this is an early 1863 Confederate Cavalry Camp, the Block "I" is the only CS button that we know of to have been dug there. Between the three of us, we have now dug 2 Eagle "I" buttons, a Dragoon cuff button, and 4 general service Eagle buttons. This shows how desperate the Confederate Army was for buttons. HH from Dman, Josh, and myself, Quindy.

This afternoon was very encouraging with us digging 3 .58 cal. dropped 3 ringers and a piece of campfire lead in a couple of hours on the scouting trip. I think we know where that camp is now for sure. Josh is on to a great site too from his calls. Thanks for going with me as I know your therapy was tough this morning. Q.

Don, we had 3 dropped 3 ringers and campfire lead but nothing good to post this time. Based on what I see, we will have some very good posts from that site in the future. Thanks, Quindy.

That's a great bunch of relics. Could you post a link to your Block I button post? I must have missed it (been too busy to catch much on the forum this year :( ).

Yes, those Rebs were hard pressed to get their hands on buttons. Years ago I dug a bunch of flower buttons at a Reb camp in West Virginia, and they were all the same design. Best I can tell, they got their hands on a stash of buttons from a sewing kit in a house they raided. It's cool to see the Union buttons from Southern camps. I wonder if the boys had any dislike of wearing 'em.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Thanks BB. Here's the link:

This Confederate camp is a puzzler with all the Yankee buttons but a local historian, veteran digger, and relic dealer who has hunted that area explains it this way:
1. Several CSA Soldiers fought in the Mexican War in 1846 and still had their uniforms with eagle buttons on them.
2. Morgan's Troops captured many U.S. uniforms and arms.
3. It's possible that this camp was dual use. The Union Soldiers moved in after Morgan left on his famous Ohio Raid in July 1863 and sent Col. R.D. Allison's and the 3 cavalry companies camped there toward Chattanooga.
Glad you tuned back in Will. Had a question a few posts back. I was worried some Cajun gal had kidnapped you in LA-LOL. Thanks my friend, Quindy.
