The local gas works open in 1860 and was a coal fussion gas works. Most main centres for 15 miles round the main strrets had gas lighting from 1863 threw till 1925. Then power lighting was used.I been digging the trash pit for a while and is located between the back fence of the old work and creek below. The ground is full of smelly waste that is a legacy of the type of methods used to make gas from coal.Say Yikes is an under statement.I ware full protection from head to toe and only dig the cleaner ground. Some patches have like a thick black tar that has stained the ground, i stay right away from this ground. The old gas workes is fenced off and is out of bounds and is considered a eco mess that will cost a great deal to clean up.
Not so may years ago i did have a chance to md the ground and lawns in the works but those days are gone. >:( >:( >:( I have about 7 of these badges which date between 1875 -1923
