Relic Hunting
Got out with fellow mid-atlantic relic & coin hunters, uncle Joe and good friend Nate, for a late winters dig in Eastern Virginia. Things were a little slow at first but everyone got on board as we moved around to different spots on this trip. The fields are being turned and disked here in Virginia, so time is running out on field hunting :sad10:. That means back to the woods and tick city as the weather warms. Heck, always got the beach to fall back on. Anyway, here are my finds and can someone please ID the naval button and the horse and deer object. It is not a marine corps button. Just need a date range. The field and site dates back to the 1850's. Thanks!

Congrats! Very nice group of finds. HH

Nice finds...the hrose item is a Watch Key/winder. The button I believe to be 1870s-1890s. The backmark is tricky as they used it 1850s+ but the loop size, lettering size and spacing is more consistent with the post war buttons. Are those marks between Extra Quality dots or stars? I am not sure of the origin, but I have seen it before so will look around. For some reason I was thinking merchant marines, but don't think so either.

Wes - I believe this to be a Coast Guard button. After thinking Merchant Marine, I immediately remembered where I saw it. This would be the earlier of the CG buttons.

Nice finds. Your button is a Coast Guard one from the turn of the century.

Wolverine.

Sweet finds!!

Beautiful, multiple finds, excellent! :notworthy: Looking forward to your next ones! Andi

what a good hunt! love the watch winder. I'd love to be diggin CW stuff and find a period IH penny! congrats

What county you guys hunting at? Can't find any great spots here in fairfax.

Your right in the action up in Northern VA. Of course, most of the stuff up that way has been built over or pounded pretty hard. We are down in the Hampton Roads area. I hunt all over eastern VA from north of Richmond, down to Petersburg, and all the counties in between. We have an abundant colonial and civil war history down here so we are very lucky I guess, plus the James River is right here and that was the express way for two hundred years!
Good finds!:icon_thumright:

Thanks a lot Dan! I forget to check the coasties for some reason. Makes perfect sense where I was hunting, big Coast Guard area not far from this site.

Dan, again thanks for the ID on the watch key. The button has the dots. No stars on the button at all, that was how I knew it was not marine corps.

No worries - that is what we are all on here for. I like the watch winders, have found several neat designs over the years at colonial and 19th century sites. (I even have a VA state seal one)

The CG button is cool, should be the earliest issued ones. I would take that over a CW Navy any day. I've dug cases of CW Navys, but never a CG.
