Ebay Listing Accountability Thread

Was the antique mall a waste of time?

I did pretty well there over the last few years. Unfortunately antique malls seem to have a definite life cycle. This one is on the downhill slide & it's no longer worth having a booth. I'm selling anything that won't transfer to eBay. Anything I don't sell I'll wholesale to another dealer and/or donate. I'm going to take the opportunity to clear out the basement & transform some of it into a dedicated ebay area.

I've got 6 more listed this morning.

That's a good idea. I didn't even think about those people buying them. You are right about people buying loaded struts. That would be a problem.

How did you come across them?

I never thought about it like that. How long did you sell there?

I think it's been about 4 years. The store was open a good bit longer than that.

Most people that sell at antique malls start out as collectors. Then they either run out of room or decide it would be nice to make money doing what they love. When they first start selling they have lots of good merchandise to sell. They supplement that with new finds. Most people do quite well for themselves until they run out of their initial stock. Then it takes them a lot more time & effort to find enough stuff to keep their booth stocked. If they are really motivated or live in a big enough city they can keep things going. Otherwise sales slow to the point where they decide it's not worth selling.

When an antique mall 1st opens up in an area there are many collectors that would like to be dealers. Some of those dealers are motivated enough to keep selling. The rest move on & are replaced with new dealers. However, at some point there aren't enough potential dealers moving into the area or collectors that would like to convert to dealers to fill all the spaces in the antique mall. When that happens the mall owners try many things to replace the lost profit from the empty booths. At some point they start letting in dealers that are more "flea market" than "antique". The store changes which changes the customer base which drives out more dealers because they can no longer get antique store prices....which means the owner gets in more "flea market" dealers....which, well you get the picture. The antique mall I've been selling in has hit the point where it's more than half flea market. That has reduced my sales by drawing in a customer base that is not willing to pay the prices I need to get to make a reasonable profit. It has also attracted a less savory crowd & more stuff has started walking out the door.

Steve Hatch 4th and final request to stop posting your finds in other members threads.

That is good info trdrhdr. Sorry to hear that one is going down hill. DieselRam, I got them for free, so anything that I do with them is good. For the second day in a row I sold one of the listings that I listed that morning in the afternoon.

That's always good when you can turn things over quickly!

I listed 12 today so far. Hopefully tonight I'll pass my goal of 50 new listings for the week. I've got the pictures took and everything, it's just listing them.

Sweet! Do you still think the store is worth doing?

Right now, yes. I'm hoping for a big weekend. I have 118 on right now because I finished up my listings tonight, putting me at my goal of 50 new listings this week. I normally make $20 per sale or so anyway, so right now, the store is fine.

Bassmaster, is a really old Kmart fishing pole worth anything?

Congrats on the sale DieselRam! Sadly, I don't think that pole is worth much.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Oh well. I just bought another pole combo yesterday as my son and I dropped his in the lake! I hope to recover it as its only in about five feet of water. It's funny now, sure wasn't when I dropped it! Lol but he was catching some bass.

Took a few weeks off before and after my cruise to relax. Started to list a lot within the last week or so with about 4/day.
26 sales so far for June. Not too bad since I was at 10 on the 10th give or take. Been going through old inventory I never got around to listing and been doing pretty good. Nice to list items that are not shirts!

Welcome back. So far this month has been slow for me mostly because I'm having a hard time finding inventory. Pretty sure I'll meet my dollar sales goal for the month but won't go much over.

Heck, anytime I hit a dollar goal I consider it a win!! For me it's more of a problem finding time!

Welcome back Justin. It is good to have a break. I'm having a pretty good month so far, but you are still beating me. Good to hear your son was catching fish DieselRam. Hopefully you can find that pole. It'll pick up trdhrdr. I would way rather meet the dollar sales goal as opposed to the items goal.
