Is edge checking reliable for quarters and dimes,,,,,I normally do halves...

yes, if something you cant tell, maybe its real dirty, give them a closer look, but yes edge it.

I rim check dimes and quarters, but I date check halves because some 40% Kennedy's look more like clad. I feel better date checking so I know I don't miss anything. Happy Hunting!

Does that work for you..? I couldn't edge check nickels at all! I can only see the difference by the natural tarnish on war nickels obverse and reverse

I don't see how edge checking nickels would even work due to the tarnishing. It would be just as easy to quickly check the "reverse dome mint marking", providing your only looking for silver.

Edge checking is very reliable for quarters and dimes.
I've found lots of Canuk-A-Coins that way and even a bit of Silver.
If you are unsure, drop the coin and listen for the Ag ring (I wonder where the phrase "rings true" came from?).
Last take a look at the date for undeniable proof that it "tis" or it "taint".

Edge checking Nickles can give a pretty good indication that it may be a tarnished War Nick.
I've pulled at least a roll over the last year from teller's trays asking if I can see the date on that dirty Nickle you got right there.
When I sort Nickels I find it easier to just look for the big mint mark rather than do any edge checking at all.

I, too, only edge hunt dimes an quarters and it's pretty reliable. Definitely a fine idea.

If I only edge check nickels, I would have probably found 95% of the war nickels that I did by face checking.
But I would have missed the V nickels, Buffs, 1938 D&S, 1939S etc, many of those nickels are worth more than 1.75 grams of silver!
