I think that perhaps someone didn't read it all... it's about coal mining. • Sept.1-17: Public Hearings on Stream Protection Rule — Testify to Stop Coal Mining Through Streams (CO, KY, MO, PA, VA, WV). Back in the 60's West Virginia had some of the most colorful streams in the nation. Of course you could charge a battery with the contents or go to the emergency room if you drank it. Compliments of big coal. As a small farmer, potter and former socialist hippy, I maintain a 100 foot riparian zone next to two streams on the property. I don't hug the trees, in fact, we are about to be harvesting about 45 - 60 acres of half century old pines. I do however, have a high regard for water quality, and help preserve it for others downstream. If any gold was present, I'd dredge the gravel all the way to China.

But at last the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has proposed a new Stream Buffer Zone Rule that would restrict all mining within 100 feet of streams.

I think 2c is seeing the bigger picture of what could be coming down the road beyond the current attack on Coal Mining. Kinda like when we were telling folks in other states to be aware as to what was happening here in California to dredging. Most folks figured it was a California problem and would never happen in their neck of the woods. Thanks for the heads up, always prudent to keep an eye on any attacks on mining

AMEN to that Fowled! As we have seen in the past, legislation that effects one form of mining is very often used to control another form even when there is no direct correlation between the two. Forewarned is forearmed!!!!

"They" being mining companies with reclamation responsibilites and hefty fines should they not comply or the EPA who can pollute an entire watershed at will with no consequences at all? When the fomer does it it's called an environmental disaster, when the latter does the exact same thing we are told there are no longterm consequences or bad health effects and no further treatment needed. Tell me who do we believe? Maybe our waterways aren't as reclaimed as we think? Maybe they didn't need the level of reclamation that they've had in the first place? Either way it appears as tho the government is once again lying to us about what is good or bad, right or wrong, needed or unnecessary.

Industries also spend massive amounts of money trying to convince everybody that they are innocent. and government is bad and if government would just get out of the way things would be better. Every criminal thinks as the Law as their enemy, and if you deregulate (legalize) these restraints they can do what they want. Hey if they deregulate the laws and allow you to get rid of your garbage down the road in the ravine in the public park (it belongs to us), I can save a fortune in garbage collection fees. History has shown balance is needed in all manner of human activities and the most common forms of control is the PUBLIC representatives of the people the government. Thank God they cleaned up the mess the mines left here in western pa and west Virginia, and in Ohio. (damn they haven't caught fire since)

Curious -what's the difference when the government does it? Other than one was done by misinformed people in the past, who have since learned from the errors of their ways and have cleaned up the methods of their industry. The other is still a lying, cheating and not being responsible entity who never learns!!!!
I've noticed from your past posts you hold some serious grudges about the mining industry. I think you'd be surprised what you'd find if you'd put some energy into learning about the modern mining industry. Time to stop falting for the sins of the fathers. These folks aren't polluting up the country side, they are so regulated and bird dogged by the government and environmentalists they can't go to the bathroom or blow their nose if the paper isn't recycled and environmentally safe for disposal. Go visit a mine. And I agree with you about balance. Unfortunately some folks have no common sense and have to be told how to conduct themselves in everything they do- very frustrating for those of us who do just fine by ourselves.

You do realize that there are hundreds of compliaint mines and gravel plant operating with no issue....far outnumbering and problematic rule breakers...the fees to run are enough...and the punishment for doing wrong harsh.....Our country is amazingly clean as far as energy production goes...especially through the view of history....the problem is the new rules and regulations are setting up to shut down any industry which means the stifling of smart moral conservation long term planned mineral resource recovery. Do you really believe stifling it here and/or only letting the big pocket companies to operate here is going to help us as a planet? You realize if we send it out of the country to places with less regulation that the environmental harm is going to be worse...and we are smacking all of our past engineering gains right back into the dirt. true there have been some crimes committed by operators and major cleanups ...but, the event ocurancec rate is so low that all this bureaucracy is seen by many as what it is a cash conduit to the Government....The cost of smart regulation and industry standard is way less than the Gov. claims we all know how the budgets work. people will stand up and question as long as they feel the truth the government and people who help them fleece us will do there best to scare and doom and gloom everyone to make sure the money keeps rolling in...

Look at California in another regard....gas taxes pay for road work...we are in the conundrum of the highest gas prices in the nation and were being told they may have to tax gas drivers more because the amount of electrics and hybrids have made such a dent in the gas tax that consumption is so down that the tax shortfall is the reason. there isn't enough money to fix the roads....YEA RIGHT!!!! How come the extra supply therefore surplus hasn't lowered our prices...oh yea that's right there is ONE refinery down for sudden unspecified repair...that one refinery...raises the prices up because of its effect on the supply....OH, PLEASE ...Did you know that even with the fires that Cali. has seen less bad air days this summer than in the last 20 years....they sure don't let that positivity get out do they....it would put people out of work and we don't want that!

We can not be held responsible for the irresponsibility of our predecessors! we didn't do it period and factually the industries have done a great job of towing the line...Production costs are enough lawsuits add to that cost...Industry hates when their production costs go up therefore they avoid adding extra cost as much as possible.they know spending more on the ground keeps you from spending more in court, we have a lot of smart mine owners they know that cutting corners costs more in the long run. let them dig in long term and build solid standards.... allow pay and play or force us into other countries with less or no regulation and there will be all kinds of straightened curves and flattened hills...

Well said! Yep our application of the NIMBY principal, while aesthetically appealling and sanitary for our country is far more harmful to the planet as a whole. You'd think the environmental organizations that are the driving force behind all this would be smart enough to realize that fact. It is all about saving the planet from us humans isn't it?

That's the thing that has always bugged the crap out of me and pulls the whole bottom out of their arguments...the focus is punishment here basically with total disregard for the rest of the world....and they actually feel like they are doing good!
